Bleeding from the ear after digging with fingers?

Hello, doctor.
I noticed some itching in my ear while studying, and when I used my finger to dig in, I found what seemed to be earwax deeper inside.
I tried to remove it, but I ended up with blood on my fingernail.
What should I do in this situation? I've never experienced this before, but sometimes I do feel ear pain, which goes away after a few days...
Thank you very much!

More Info

When you experience bleeding from the ear after digging with your fingers, it is essential to approach the situation with caution. The ear is a delicate structure, and improper handling can lead to complications, including infections or damage to the ear canal or eardrum. Here’s what you should do:
1. Stop Digging: First and foremost, refrain from further digging or inserting anything into your ear. This includes fingers, cotton swabs, or any other objects. Doing so can exacerbate the injury or push earwax deeper into the ear canal.

2. Assess the Situation: If you notice blood, it’s crucial to evaluate the extent of the bleeding. If it is a small amount and there is no pain or other symptoms, you may monitor the situation. However, if the bleeding is significant, persistent, or accompanied by pain, dizziness, or hearing loss, you should seek medical attention promptly.

3. Keep the Ear Dry: Avoid getting water in the ear while it is healing. You can use a cotton ball to cover the ear while showering, but do not insert it into the ear canal.

4. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from irritants such as loud noises, which can further stress the ear, and avoid using ear drops or any medications without consulting a healthcare professional.

5. Seek Medical Attention: If the bleeding does not stop, if you experience severe pain, or if you notice any discharge that is yellow or green, it is essential to see a doctor. An ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist can examine your ear to determine if there is any damage to the ear canal or eardrum and provide appropriate treatment.

6. Follow-Up: If you have a history of ear pain or recurrent issues, it may be beneficial to have a follow-up appointment with an ENT specialist. They can assess your ear health and provide recommendations on proper ear care.

Additional Information on Ear Health
The ear is divided into three main parts: the outer ear, middle ear, and inner ear. The outer ear includes the ear canal, which is lined with skin and tiny hairs that help trap dust and debris. Earwax (cerumen) is produced to protect the ear canal, but excessive cleaning can lead to irritation or injury.

Injuries to the ear canal can lead to a condition known as otitis externa, or swimmer's ear, which is an infection of the outer ear canal. Symptoms may include itching, redness, swelling, and discharge. If left untreated, infections can spread and lead to more severe complications.

If you frequently experience itching or discomfort in your ears, it may be due to excessive earwax buildup, allergies, or skin conditions such as eczema. It is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment rather than attempting to clean your ears yourself.

In summary, while it may be tempting to dig into your ears when they feel itchy, it is crucial to avoid doing so to prevent injury and complications. If you experience bleeding or other concerning symptoms, seek medical advice to ensure your ear health is maintained.
