Experiencing flashes of light when closing your eyes?
Hello, Doctor Gao! On July 19, during a dilated eye examination of my left eye, there were no issues found in the fundus, but I did have floaters.
The doctor diagnosed it as vitreous degeneration.
On July 24, while I was closing my eyes to sleep, I suddenly experienced a brief flash of light just as I was about to fall asleep.
I immediately got up to look around, but I did not see any flashes, and my vision was normal; the floaters had not increased either.
This has made me anxious about when I might suddenly experience another flash while closing my eyes, so I couldn't sleep all night.
Is it necessary to see an ophthalmologist immediately for this phenomenon? Thank you for your response.

More Info
Experiencing flashing lights or sensations of light when closing your eyes can be concerning, especially for someone with a history of floaters or other eye conditions. Based on your description, it seems that you have undergone a thorough examination recently, including a dilated eye exam, which did not reveal any significant issues with your retina. This is a positive sign, as it suggests that there are no immediate concerns such as retinal detachment or severe vitreous degeneration.
Flashing lights, particularly when they occur while closing your eyes or transitioning into sleep, can often be attributed to a few benign causes. One common explanation is related to the vitreous gel in the eye. As we age, the vitreous can begin to shrink and pull away from the retina, which can create sensations of light or flashes. This is often more noticeable in individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) or those who have experienced floaters, as you mentioned.
The phenomenon you described—seeing flashes of light just before falling asleep—could also be related to the brain's processing of visual stimuli as it transitions into sleep. This is sometimes referred to as "phosphenes," which are perceived flashes of light that can occur without external light sources. They can be triggered by pressure on the eyes, rapid eye movements, or even changes in the electrical activity of the brain as it shifts into different states of consciousness.
Given that you have not noticed any changes in your floaters, and your vision remains stable, it is likely that this experience is not indicative of a serious problem. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If the flashes become more frequent, if you start to notice new floaters, or if you experience any changes in your vision (such as dark spots, shadows, or a curtain-like effect), it would be prudent to seek an eye examination promptly.
In terms of anxiety surrounding these symptoms, it's understandable to feel concerned, especially when it comes to eye health. Anxiety can often exacerbate the perception of visual disturbances, leading to a cycle of worry. It might be helpful to practice relaxation techniques or mindfulness to manage your anxiety, especially at night when you are trying to sleep.
In conclusion, while the occasional experience of flashing lights when closing your eyes may not be a cause for immediate concern, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you notice any changes or if your symptoms persist, do not hesitate to consult with an eye care professional for further evaluation. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider can help alleviate concerns and ensure your eye health remains a priority.
