Eye Pressure and Pain After COVID-19 Vaccination - Ophthalmology

Eye swelling and pain?

Hello, doctor.
A few days ago, I asked you about my eye pressure, which seems to be high.
Specifically, I haven't measured my eye pressure, so I'm not sure if it's elevated, but I have been experiencing a sensation of pressure and pain in my eyes, especially when moving my eyeballs, which intensifies the discomfort.
Pressing on the acupressure points around my eye sockets or resting my eyes helps a little.
Recently, after receiving the AZ vaccine, this sensation of pressure and pain has become more pronounced and intense.
I would like to know if this discomfort could be related to the side effects of the AZ vaccine.
My side effects include noticeable muscle soreness throughout my body; even though most of it has improved, I still feel some pain whenever I use my muscles.
If this pressure and pain in my eyes persist, should I see an ophthalmologist, or would it be better to consult a family medicine physician to determine if it is related to the vaccine?

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello, Miaomiao: The side effects of vaccines can vary from person to person, but there have been no reported cases of eye swelling or pain.
However, if you experience a fever, you may feel a burning or aching sensation in your eyes.
I recommend that you consult an ophthalmologist.
Online responses can only serve as a reference; if necessary, it is important to seek medical attention at a healthcare facility.

It's understandable to be concerned about eye pain and pressure, especially after receiving a COVID-19 vaccination like the AZ vaccine. While I cannot provide a definitive diagnosis, I can offer some insights based on your symptoms and the general medical knowledge surrounding eye health and vaccination side effects.

First, it's important to recognize that vaccines, including the AZ vaccine, can cause a range of side effects. Commonly reported side effects include fatigue, muscle aches, fever, and localized pain at the injection site. However, ocular symptoms such as eye pain or pressure are not typically listed as common side effects of the vaccine. That said, individual reactions can vary, and some people may experience unusual symptoms following vaccination.

The eye pain and pressure you are experiencing could be related to several factors. One possibility is that the discomfort is a result of muscle tension or strain, particularly if you have been using electronic devices more frequently or have been under stress. Prolonged screen time can lead to digital eye strain, which manifests as discomfort, dryness, and a sensation of pressure in the eyes. This is often exacerbated by poor posture or improper lighting conditions while using screens.

Another consideration is that the vaccination process can sometimes trigger an inflammatory response in the body. If you are experiencing systemic muscle soreness, it is possible that your body is reacting to the vaccine, which could indirectly affect your eyes. Inflammation can lead to increased sensitivity and discomfort in various parts of the body, including the eyes.

Given that your eye pain has intensified after vaccination, it would be prudent to monitor your symptoms closely. If the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as vision changes, redness, or swelling, it would be advisable to seek medical attention. An eye specialist (ophthalmologist) would be best suited to evaluate your eye health and determine if there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed. They can perform a comprehensive eye examination, including measuring intraocular pressure, to rule out conditions such as glaucoma or other ocular pathologies.

If you are unsure whether to see an ophthalmologist or a family physician, consider starting with your family doctor. They can assess your overall health, review your vaccination history, and determine if your symptoms are related to the vaccine or if they warrant a referral to an eye specialist.

In the meantime, here are some self-care tips to help alleviate your eye discomfort:
1. Take Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This helps reduce eye strain.

2. Adjust Your Environment: Ensure that your workspace is well-lit and that your screen is at eye level to minimize strain on your neck and eyes.

3. Use Artificial Tears: If you are experiencing dryness, consider using over-the-counter artificial tears to keep your eyes lubricated.

4. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to your eyes can help relax the muscles around the eyes and alleviate discomfort.

5. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain overall hydration, which can benefit eye health.

In conclusion, while your eye pain may not be a direct side effect of the AZ vaccine, it is essential to pay attention to your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist. Your health and comfort are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the best guidance tailored to your situation.
