Irregular menstruation
Hello Doctor: Since my menstruation ended from July 10 to July 14 last year, I have not had my period until I visited the doctor on October 7 and received medication to induce menstruation (I have been seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for menstrual regulation).
I received an injection to induce menstruation on October 23, and my period came, lasting until October 28 (6 days, moderate flow).
I continued seeing the traditional Chinese medicine practitioner without interruption.
My next period was from January 1 to January 5 (5 days, moderate flow).
On April 16, I received medication from the gynecologist to induce menstruation, which occurred from April 23 to April 27 (6 days, light flow).
The gynecologist performed an ultrasound and mentioned that I might have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), which I had not had before.
It was suggested that some individuals might develop PCOS due to traditional Chinese medicine for menstrual regulation.
Now, I am unsure whether I should continue taking traditional Chinese medicine.
After stopping traditional Chinese medicine, I noticed that I experience dull abdominal pain after intercourse.
My app records my cycle and reminds me when my period is due, and I also feel similar dull pain in my lower abdomen before my period is supposed to start, but it ultimately does not come.
Currently, my last menstruation was from June 4 to June 8 (6 days, light flow) without medication.
Q1: Is it possible that traditional Chinese medicine for menstrual regulation could lead to polycystic ovary syndrome?
Q2: What tests should I seek from a Western medicine doctor now?
Q3: Can irregular menstruation also cause weight gain?
Thank you for your help!

Irregular menstruation, also known as oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, can be a complex issue influenced by various factors, including hormonal imbalances, lifestyle choices, and underlying medical conditions. Your situation, characterized by irregular menstrual cycles and the potential diagnosis of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), raises several important questions that warrant a detailed discussion.
Q1: Can traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) lead to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?
While TCM is often used to regulate menstrual cycles and address various gynecological issues, there is limited scientific evidence directly linking TCM treatments to the development of PCOS. PCOS is primarily characterized by hormonal imbalances, particularly elevated levels of androgens (male hormones), insulin resistance, and the presence of multiple cysts on the ovaries. Factors contributing to PCOS include genetics, obesity, and metabolic issues rather than specific treatments like TCM. However, if the herbal remedies you were taking contained ingredients that may have hormonal effects, it could potentially influence your menstrual cycle and ovarian function. It is essential to consult with a healthcare provider familiar with both TCM and Western medicine to evaluate the specific herbs you were using and their potential impact.
Q2: What tests should I pursue with a Western medicine doctor?
Given your symptoms and the potential diagnosis of PCOS, it would be prudent to undergo a comprehensive evaluation. Here are some recommended tests:
1. Hormonal Profile: Blood tests to measure levels of hormones such as estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). This can help assess any hormonal imbalances.
2. Insulin and Glucose Tolerance Tests: Since insulin resistance is common in PCOS, these tests can help evaluate how your body processes sugar and insulin.
3. Pelvic Ultrasound: A transvaginal ultrasound can help visualize the ovaries and check for the presence of cysts, which is a hallmark of PCOS.
4. Thyroid Function Tests: Thyroid disorders can also cause menstrual irregularities, so it’s essential to rule out thyroid dysfunction.
5. Lipid Profile: Since women with PCOS are at higher risk for metabolic syndrome, checking cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be beneficial.
Q3: Can irregular menstruation cause weight gain?
Yes, irregular menstruation can be associated with weight gain, particularly in the context of PCOS. The hormonal imbalances seen in PCOS can lead to increased insulin levels, which may promote fat storage and make it more challenging to lose weight. Additionally, irregular cycles can affect metabolism and appetite regulation, leading to weight fluctuations. It’s important to address these concerns holistically, focusing on lifestyle modifications such as diet and exercise, which can help manage both weight and menstrual regularity.
Conclusion:
In summary, your experience with irregular menstruation and the potential diagnosis of PCOS requires a multifaceted approach. While TCM may have played a role in your menstrual irregularities, it is crucial to pursue a thorough evaluation with a Western medicine provider to understand the underlying causes better. Regular monitoring and a tailored treatment plan can help manage symptoms and improve your overall health. Lifestyle changes, including a balanced diet and regular physical activity, can also play a significant role in managing PCOS and its associated symptoms. If you have further concerns or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional who can guide you through this process.
