Can depression really be cured? Does taking Xanax cause headaches?

Hello, regarding the topic, let's start with the medication.
I have experienced quite noticeable side effects after taking it; essentially, I have mild depression.
I can manage without medication, but on that particular day, I felt uncomfortable and confused, just wanting to lie down.
It's quite frustrating.
My other question is, can depression be cured? I believe that most people who suffer from depression have tragic backgrounds, which is fundamentally an environmental issue.
During middle school, I scored the highest in intelligence tests (out of 300 students), but after entering university, I was expelled due to underlying family issues that have now surfaced at an age when I should have been developing my career.
Instead, I find myself in a sad situation, working as a cleaner.
Does this mean there is something wrong with me? I know that’s not the case, but even if I recover, my family won't suddenly become wealthy, and the time to learn a profession has already passed.
I have no desire to prepare for any exams anymore.
Yet, I also don't want to take on low-paying jobs like driving or carpentry.
This awkward dilemma leaves me in a state of confusion, relying on my family's money, which is both embarrassing and unavoidable.
Am I left with no choice but to retake university entrance exams? Doctor, you must have achieved a lot in your studies.
I realize that to escape the low-paying jobs, I need a diploma and knowledge, but my mindset is no longer able to accept preparing for exams.
Will I ultimately have to face these exams, or will I be stuck in this situation forever? (Poor people have no other resources to develop skills.
Am I destined to never escape the pressures of major exams?)

Dr. Lin Mianzhang reply Psychiatry

Hello, Xiao Jian: Depression can be treated effectively, and if it is not too severe, you can at least return to a normal life, especially since you are experiencing mild depression.
Regarding medication, Xanax is an anxiolytic and does not have an effect on treating depression, so if you do indeed have depression, it is advisable to take an antidepressant instead, which should be evaluated by your physician.
It is true that a side effect of Xanax can be headaches.
From my perspective, your advantages include being intelligent and young.
You know that to become a physician, you don't necessarily need to be exceptionally smart, but you do need to work hard.
I have classmates in medical school who are nearly forty years old, and you are only 23, so if you want to study, you definitely can.
Of course, studying is just one approach; if you are not interested in studying, you can also develop a skill, which will provide you with a means of livelihood.
The government also offers vocational training programs that you can participate in.
If you often feel troubled and want to talk to someone, you can also visit a psychiatrist to have a conversation.
Wishing you peace and health.

Depression is a complex mental health condition that can significantly impact an individual's life, and the question of whether it can be cured is multifaceted. The good news is that many people with depression can achieve substantial improvement and even full recovery with appropriate treatment. However, the journey to recovery can vary greatly from person to person, influenced by factors such as the severity of the depression, the presence of co-occurring mental health issues, and the individual's support system.

Understanding Depression and Its Treatment
Depression can manifest in various forms, including major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder, among others. Each type has its own characteristics and treatment approaches. Treatment typically involves a combination of psychotherapy (talk therapy) and medication, such as antidepressants.
Antidepressants can help to balance chemicals in the brain that affect mood and emotions. However, they may come with side effects, which can include nausea, weight gain, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction. It's essential to discuss these potential side effects with a healthcare provider, as they can help tailor the treatment plan to minimize discomfort while maximizing effectiveness.

Can Depression Be Cured?
The term "cure" can be misleading when discussing depression. While many individuals experience significant relief from symptoms and can lead fulfilling lives, some may find that depression is a recurring issue. This is particularly true for those with a history of severe depression or those who have experienced significant life stressors.
Research indicates that with proper treatment, including medication and therapy, many people can manage their symptoms effectively. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and other therapeutic approaches can equip individuals with coping strategies to handle stressors and negative thought patterns that contribute to depression.

The Role of Environment and Support
Environmental factors, such as family dynamics and life stressors, play a crucial role in the development and persistence of depression. For individuals who have faced traumatic or challenging backgrounds, addressing these underlying issues through therapy can be vital. Support from family, friends, and mental health professionals can also significantly impact recovery.
It's important to recognize that while one may feel trapped in their current situation, change is possible. Engaging in activities that promote well-being, such as exercise, socializing, and pursuing hobbies, can help improve mood and outlook.

The Path Forward
If you find yourself feeling stuck or overwhelmed by your circumstances, it may be beneficial to seek professional help. A mental health professional can provide a safe space to explore your feelings and develop a personalized treatment plan. This may include medication, therapy, or a combination of both.

Additionally, consider exploring vocational training or educational opportunities that align with your interests. While it may feel daunting, many individuals have successfully transitioned into new careers or educational paths later in life.

Conclusion
In summary, while depression can be a challenging condition, it is treatable. Many individuals find relief through a combination of medication, therapy, and lifestyle changes. It is crucial to address both the psychological and environmental factors contributing to your depression. Seeking help is a strong and positive step toward recovery. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and support is available to help you navigate through these difficult times.
