Questions about tonsil issues again?

Thank you, Dr.
Hong, for your previous response.
I later visited an otolaryngologist, but the doctor said they didn't see any stones in the area I mentioned.
The white appearance is likely due to inflammation, possibly from an injury I caused while cleaning.
I would like to ask if the slightly pale white area indicates inflammation, and why inflammation would appear white.
Additionally, I experience a mild pain, especially when consuming acidic or very hot/cold foods, which feels like a slight stinging sensation.
Could this be due to a break in the skin? The otolaryngologist prescribed red and yellow antibiotics and a yellow pain reliever, and advised me to drink plenty of water and gargle.

If it is inflammation or a skin break, how long might it take to heal? I also came across information online about severe neck infections that require surgery, which sounds quite alarming.
I'm concerned that if I poke at it, it could lead to such serious issues.
I forgot to ask the otolaryngologist yesterday, but during the examination, they mentioned that my issue is not serious, and advised me to avoid staying up late, drink more water, and return if I feel uncomfortable after finishing the medication.
I hope to ask again; I apologize for the trouble.
Thank you.

Hello,
1.
Inflamed tissue appears white due to relatively fewer blood vessels.
2.
Due to inflammation, consuming irritating substances can indeed cause discomfort.
3.
Typically, recovery takes about 5 to 7 days, but it depends on each individual's immune response.
4.
With appropriate treatment and considering your relatively young age, it is unlikely to develop a severe infection.
5.
Staying well-hydrated and getting plenty of rest will aid in recovery; seek medical attention if discomfort persists.
Thank you for your inquiry.

Tonsil inflammation, commonly known as tonsillitis, can manifest with various symptoms and concerns, particularly when it comes to the appearance and sensation in the throat. The white patches you mentioned are often indicative of inflammation or infection in the tonsils. These patches can be caused by a buildup of pus, dead cells, or bacteria, and they are typically associated with pain, especially when consuming acidic or hot/cold foods and beverages. This pain can indeed feel like a sharp or stinging sensation, particularly if there are any abrasions or "broken skin" in the area due to irritation or injury from self-cleaning.

In terms of treatment, your ENT specialist has prescribed antibiotics, which are essential if the inflammation is due to a bacterial infection. The pain relief medication is also crucial for managing discomfort. It's important to follow the prescribed regimen and ensure you stay hydrated, as this can help soothe the throat and promote healing. Gargling with warm salt water can also provide symptomatic relief.

Regarding the duration of recovery, mild cases of tonsillitis can improve within a few days, especially with appropriate treatment. However, if the inflammation is more severe or if there are complications, it may take longer. Generally, if you are adhering to your treatment plan and taking care of your throat, you should start to feel better within a week. If symptoms persist beyond this period or worsen, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider.

Your concern about the potential for severe complications, such as a neck infection, is valid but should not cause undue anxiety. While it is true that untreated or severe tonsillitis can lead to complications like peritonsillar abscesses or even deeper neck infections, these situations are relatively rare, especially when you are under medical care. The key is to monitor your symptoms closely. If you experience difficulty breathing, swallowing, or if the pain becomes unbearable, you should seek immediate medical attention.

It's also worth noting that self-managing tonsillitis by "poking" or "cleaning" the tonsils can lead to further irritation or injury, which may exacerbate inflammation or lead to infection. It’s best to avoid such practices and let the body heal naturally with the help of prescribed medications.

In summary, the white area in your throat is likely a sign of inflammation, and the pain you are experiencing is not uncommon. With the right treatment and care, you should see improvement within a few days to a week. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider, and do not hesitate to reach out if you have further concerns or if your symptoms change. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your well-being.
