Pain under the left lower rib?
I'm not sure if it's related to sleeping on my ribs these past few days, but when I lie flat, the lower left rib hurts when I inhale, and it hurts even more when I exhale.
Sometimes it hurts when I'm sitting, and sometimes it doesn't.
I usually sleep on my left side, with my entire left side pressed against the bed, which puts pressure on my ribs.
I would like to know if this pain could be due to sleeping on my ribs these past two days.

Hello, based on your message, it seems to be a common occurrence of pleuritis in young individuals.
Generally speaking, the use of anti-inflammatory and analgesic medications should be quite effective.
Thank you.

Pain in the lower left rib can be a concerning symptom, and it’s important to consider various potential causes. Based on your description, it seems that the discomfort may be related to your sleeping position, particularly if you have been lying on your left side for extended periods. This position can put pressure on the ribs and surrounding muscles, leading to pain during inhalation and exhalation.
When you lie on your side, especially if your body weight is concentrated on one side, it can compress the rib cage and the intercostal muscles (the muscles between the ribs). This compression can lead to muscle strain or irritation, which may explain why you feel more pain when you breathe deeply or when you change positions. Additionally, if you have been sleeping in a position that causes your ribs to be pressed against a hard surface, it could lead to localized pain due to the pressure on the ribs and the underlying tissues.
However, while your sleeping position is a likely contributor to your discomfort, it’s important to rule out other potential causes of rib pain. Some other possibilities include:
1. Muscle Strain: Overuse or strain of the muscles around the rib cage can lead to pain, especially if you have engaged in activities that involve twisting or heavy lifting.
2. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It can cause sharp pain in the rib area, which may worsen with certain movements or deep breathing.
3. Rib Fracture: If you have experienced any trauma or injury to the area, even minor, a rib fracture could be a possibility. This would typically cause significant pain, especially with movement or deep breathing.
4. Gastrointestinal Issues: Sometimes, pain in the lower left rib can be referred pain from gastrointestinal problems, such as gas, bloating, or issues related to the spleen or stomach.
5. Nerve Irritation: Conditions such as a pinched nerve in the thoracic spine could also lead to pain that radiates to the rib area.
Given that your pain seems to correlate with your sleeping position, it may be beneficial to try adjusting your sleeping habits. Here are some suggestions:
- Change Your Sleeping Position: Try sleeping on your back or right side to relieve pressure on the left ribs. If you prefer to sleep on your left side, consider using a softer mattress or adding a pillow for support.
- Use Pillows for Support: Placing a pillow between your knees or under your arm can help alleviate pressure on the ribs while you sleep.
- Gentle Stretching: Incorporating gentle stretches for your back and ribcage can help relieve tension in the muscles surrounding the ribs.
- Heat Therapy: Applying a warm compress or heating pad to the affected area can help soothe muscle tension and reduce pain.
If the pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as difficulty breathing, fever, or significant discomfort, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, which may include physical examination and imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your rib pain and recommend appropriate treatment.
