Is It Normal for My Toenail to Keep Bleeding After Injury? - Surgery

Nail issues

Yesterday, I stubbed my big toe, causing my nail to come off and resulting in a significant amount of bleeding.
Although I saw a doctor who removed the nail and the bleeding stopped, when I got home, I may have exerted myself, which caused the toe to start bleeding again.
About two hours later, the bleeding stopped, but this morning I noticed there is still some bleeding.
Is this phenomenon normal?

It sounds like you experienced a significant injury to your big toe, resulting in the loss of your toenail and subsequent bleeding. After such an injury, it is not uncommon to see some bleeding, especially if the area is disturbed or if pressure is applied. Here’s a detailed explanation of what might be happening and what you should consider.

When you injure your toenail and it becomes detached, the underlying nail bed can be exposed. This area is rich in blood vessels, and any movement or pressure can cause bleeding to resume, even after it has initially stopped. The fact that you experienced bleeding again after returning home and possibly putting weight on your foot is not unusual. It’s important to keep in mind that the nail bed can take time to heal, and during this period, it may be sensitive and prone to bleeding if disturbed.

Here are some key points to consider regarding your situation:
1. Initial Bleeding: After the injury, it is normal for there to be bleeding, especially if the nail was forcibly removed. The bleeding should gradually decrease as the area begins to heal.

2. Post-Injury Care: After the removal of the toenail, it is crucial to keep the area clean and dry. You should follow your doctor's instructions regarding wound care. If you were advised to keep the area covered, make sure to do so to prevent further injury and to minimize the risk of infection.

3. Signs of Infection: While some bleeding can be normal, you should be vigilant for signs of infection. These include increased redness, swelling, warmth around the area, pus or discharge, and worsening pain. If you notice any of these symptoms, it is essential to seek medical attention.

4. Continued Bleeding: If the bleeding persists or if you notice that it is significant, it may be a sign that the area is not healing properly or that there is still trauma to the blood vessels. In such cases, it would be wise to consult your healthcare provider again for further evaluation.

5. Rest and Elevation: To help reduce bleeding and swelling, try to keep your foot elevated and avoid putting weight on it as much as possible. Resting the injured toe can help facilitate healing.

6. Follow-Up Care: Since you have already seen a doctor, it is advisable to follow up with them if the bleeding does not stop or if you have any concerns. They may want to assess the injury further, possibly through imaging, to ensure there are no underlying issues.

In summary, while some bleeding after a toenail injury can be normal, especially if the area is disturbed, it is crucial to monitor the situation closely. If you experience persistent bleeding, signs of infection, or any other concerning symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for further guidance. Proper care and monitoring will help ensure that your toe heals correctly and minimizes the risk of complications.
