Left ear pain accompanied by numbness in the left tongue?
Hello, Doctor.
I would like to ask about the frequent pain in my left ear that has been occurring for about two weeks.
Subsequently, I started experiencing numbness in my tongue, primarily on the left side, extending to the tip (more pronounced in the back, with a pulsating sensation).
Sometimes, the pain in my ear is very intense, feeling deep inside, but at other times it is more tolerable.
Pressing on the ear canal gives me an unusual sensation.
I would like to know if you have any recommendations for which specialist I should see or if you have any insights into what might be wrong.
Thank you.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your left ear pain and tongue numbness. Based on your symptoms, it’s important to consider a few potential underlying issues that could be affecting both your ear and tongue.
Firstly, the pain in your left ear, especially if it is frequent and severe, could be indicative of several conditions. One common cause of ear pain is Eustachian tube dysfunction, which can occur when the tube that connects the middle ear to the back of the throat becomes blocked or does not function properly. This can lead to pressure changes in the ear, resulting in pain and discomfort. Additionally, if you are experiencing a sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear, this could further support this diagnosis.
Another possibility is temporal mandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. The TMJ is located very close to the ear, and issues with this joint can lead to referred pain in the ear. Symptoms of TMJ dysfunction often include pain when chewing, clicking sounds when moving the jaw, and sometimes even ear pain. Given that you mentioned the pain can be severe at times and can be triggered by certain movements, this could be a factor to consider.
The numbness in your tongue, particularly if it is localized to the left side, could be related to a few different issues. One possibility is nerve involvement, such as irritation or compression of the hypoglossal nerve (which controls tongue movement) or the trigeminal nerve (which provides sensation to the face and tongue). This could occur due to inflammation or other issues in the area surrounding these nerves.
Another potential cause for the combination of ear pain and tongue numbness could be an infection. For instance, a viral infection, such as herpes zoster (which can cause shingles), can affect the ear and lead to pain and neurological symptoms, including numbness in the tongue.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to seek a thorough evaluation from an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a detailed examination, which may include a physical examination of the ear, throat, and neck, as well as imaging studies like an MRI or CT scan if necessary. This will help in ruling out any serious conditions and determining the exact cause of your symptoms.
In the meantime, it may be beneficial to keep track of any additional symptoms you experience, such as changes in hearing, any associated headaches, or if the numbness spreads to other areas. This information can be very helpful for your healthcare provider in making a diagnosis.
If you are experiencing significant pain or if the numbness worsens, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to neurological symptoms and persistent pain.
I hope this information helps you understand your symptoms better, and I encourage you to seek medical attention soon for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Wishing you a speedy recovery!
