Is sexual activity harmful to health?

Hello doctor, I am 18 years old.
I started my menstrual period at 11, and recently I have been reading a lot online and discovered that engaging in sexual activity under the age of 18 can cause significant harm to the body, particularly to the uterus and vagina.
I am very worried.
When I was 17.5 years old, I had sexual relations with my boyfriend, and we practiced safe sex.
I would like to ask you two questions:
1.
Since I was only six months away from turning 18 at that time, is it true that I could experience such severe harm as mentioned online?
2.
If there is indeed harm to my body, how can I take care of myself to recover?
3.
Is it too early to start having Pap smears annually at the age of 18?
Thank you, doctor, for taking the time to answer!

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, it is best to arrange for sexual activity.
You can engage in sexual intercourse, but it will be at your own expense.
Wishing you good health.

It's great that you're seeking information about sexual health, especially at such a pivotal time in your life. Understanding the implications of sexual activity on your health is crucial, and I’m here to clarify some of your concerns.

1. Impact of Sexual Activity on Health: Engaging in sexual activity at a young age, particularly when it is consensual and safe, does not inherently cause severe harm to the body, including the uterus or vagina. The concerns you may have read about online often stem from misinformation or exaggerated claims. As long as you practice safe sex—using condoms or other forms of contraception—you significantly reduce the risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and unintended pregnancies. The physical structures of the female reproductive system are designed to accommodate sexual activity, and unless there are underlying health issues or trauma, engaging in consensual sex should not lead to long-term damage.

2. Addressing Health Concerns: If you are worried about any potential harm from your previous sexual experiences, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough examination and provide personalized advice. If you feel any discomfort or unusual symptoms, don't hesitate to seek medical attention. In terms of "repairing" or "nourishing" your body, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key. This includes a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, regular exercise, staying hydrated, and managing stress. Additionally, regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can help monitor your reproductive health.

3. Routine Health Screenings: Regarding your question about Pap smears, the general recommendation is for women to begin cervical cancer screening at age 21, regardless of sexual history. However, if you have concerns about your sexual health or experience any symptoms, discussing these with your healthcare provider can help determine the appropriate timing for screenings. Starting regular check-ups at 18 is not too early, especially if you are sexually active. It’s a proactive step towards ensuring your health and well-being.

In conclusion, while there are many myths surrounding sexual activity and its effects on young women's health, the reality is that with safe practices and regular medical care, you can maintain a healthy reproductive system. It's essential to stay informed and communicate openly with healthcare professionals about any concerns you may have. Remember, your health is a priority, and taking charge of it by seeking knowledge and care is a positive step forward.
