Cervical lymph nodes
Hello, doctor.
About a month ago, I had a mouth ulcer and noticed a lymph node enlargement of approximately 2 centimeters in the lower jaw.
I visited a nearby clinic, and the doctor said there was nothing to worry about.
About two weeks later, the lymph node swelling improved, but then I developed a pustular acne lesion, which caused the lymph node in the lower jaw to swell again.
My first question is whether this could be related to the pustule.
My second question is that since I have experienced another mouth ulcer and now have another lymph node enlargement of 2 centimeters near the Adam's apple, should I go to the clinic for an examination due to the lymph node enlargement in two locations? Thank you.

Hello: It is common for lymph nodes in the nearby area to swell during an infection.
However, if there is persistent enlargement, exceeding one centimeter, or ongoing pain, it is recommended to visit an otolaryngologist for examination and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to lymph node swelling, understanding the underlying causes and when to seek medical attention is crucial for your health. Based on your description, it appears that you have experienced lymph node enlargement in response to localized infections, such as the ulcer in your mouth and the subsequent acne that became infected. This is a common physiological response, as lymph nodes play a vital role in the immune system by filtering out pathogens and producing lymphocytes to fight infections.
1. Connection Between Lymph Node Swelling and Infection: The swelling of lymph nodes, particularly in the jaw area, is often a sign that your body is responding to an infection. When you had the ulcer in your mouth, it likely led to localized inflammation, causing the lymph nodes in that region to swell as they worked to combat the infection. Similarly, the development of an infected acne lesion can also trigger lymph node enlargement. Infections in the oral cavity, skin, or even the throat can lead to reactive lymphadenopathy, which is a benign enlargement of lymph nodes due to immune response.
2. When to Seek Medical Attention: While it is not uncommon for lymph nodes to swell in response to infections, there are certain signs that warrant further evaluation by a healthcare professional. Given that you have experienced two separate instances of lymph node swelling, each measuring around 2 cm, it is advisable to consult a doctor. The following criteria can help you determine when to seek medical attention:
- Persistent Swelling: If the lymph nodes remain swollen for more than two weeks without improvement, it is essential to get them checked.
- Size and Consistency: Lymph nodes that are larger than 1 cm, firm, hard, or fixed to surrounding tissues may require further investigation.
- Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue, these could be signs of a more serious condition that needs to be evaluated.
- Location: Lymph nodes in certain areas, such as the supraclavicular region or those that are persistently enlarged in multiple locations, may warrant further investigation.
In your case, since you have had recurrent swelling in different areas, it is prudent to visit a healthcare provider. They may perform a physical examination and possibly recommend imaging studies or blood tests to rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while lymph node swelling can often be benign and related to infections, persistent or concerning symptoms should not be ignored. Consulting with a healthcare professional will provide you with peace of mind and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly. It is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.
