Erectile dysfunction

Hello doctor, I am currently 17 years old.
Recently, I contracted molluscum contagiosum for some unknown reason.
I visited a urologist who prescribed me a topical ointment, and I am currently improving.
However, during the treatment period, I was worried about spreading the infection, so I hardly masturbated.
My erectile function was normal during this time, but last Saturday afternoon, I decided to masturbate and suddenly couldn't get an erection.
Watching adult films didn't help either.
That evening, I still couldn't get an erection, although I had no issues that morning.
The next day, Sunday, I woke up without an erection, but after some manual stimulation, I was able to achieve an erection.
However, once it subsided, I couldn't get an erection again, no matter what I tried.
I am still so young and have no sexual experience.
I exercise regularly and do not have obesity or chronic diseases.
Why is this happening? I usually sleep around 3 AM but manage to sleep until noon, getting a full 8 hours of sleep.
Why is this happening? I am really anxious and don't want to experience this at such a young age.
Could you please explain this to me? Would going to bed earlier and waking up earlier help improve the situation?

Yan, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/08/01

Dr. Sun Hongshun reply Urology

Hello Yan! Please don't be overly anxious! When it comes to "sexual performance," the more you try to perform well, the more likely you are to experience the opposite effect! Anxiety can prevent you from functioning at your normal level.
Try to relax, and I believe you will improve without any medication! Additionally, going to bed at 3 AM is indeed too late for someone in your developmental stage! Getting to bed earlier, along with appropriate exercise, will definitely benefit your overall health and sexual function in the future!

Erectile dysfunction (ED) in young men can be a concerning issue, especially at a young age like 17. It's important to understand that while it can be alarming, there are various factors that can contribute to this condition, and many of them are not permanent. Let's break down some potential causes and solutions based on your situation.

Causes of Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men
1. Psychological Factors: One of the most common causes of ED in younger men is psychological. Anxiety, stress, and fear of performance can significantly affect sexual arousal and function. Since you mentioned that you recently had a health issue (the infection), it's possible that anxiety about your condition or fear of further complications could be impacting your ability to achieve an erection.

2. Sleep Patterns: You noted that you have been sleeping late and waking up around noon, which can disrupt your body's natural circadian rhythm. Sleep is crucial for hormonal balance, including testosterone levels, which play a significant role in sexual function. Poor sleep can lead to fatigue and decreased libido, which may explain your recent difficulties.

3. Physical Health: Although you mentioned that you are active and do not have obesity or chronic diseases, it's still important to consider overall physical health. Factors such as diet, hydration, and even the effects of medications (like those for your infection) can influence erectile function.

4. Hormonal Issues: While less common in young men, hormonal imbalances can also lead to ED. If you suspect this might be an issue, a healthcare provider can perform tests to check your hormone levels.

5. Substance Use: Although you did not mention any substance use, it's important to consider that alcohol, recreational drugs, and even excessive caffeine can impact erectile function.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Address Psychological Factors: If anxiety or stress is a concern, consider talking to a counselor or therapist who specializes in sexual health. They can help you work through any fears or anxieties you may have regarding sexual performance.

2. Improve Sleep Hygiene: Try to establish a regular sleep schedule. Aim to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, and avoid screens before bedtime. Quality sleep can help regulate hormones and improve overall health.

3. Healthy Lifestyle Choices: Maintain a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Regular exercise can improve blood flow and overall health, which is beneficial for sexual function.

4. Limit Stress: Engage in stress-reducing activities such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises. These can help calm your mind and improve your overall well-being.

5. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the problem persists, it may be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including checking for any underlying health issues and discussing any medications you are taking.

6. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: It's easy to jump to conclusions about your health, especially when experiencing something new and concerning. Avoid self-diagnosing and seek professional advice for a proper assessment.

Conclusion
Erectile dysfunction at a young age can be distressing, but it is often temporary and can be addressed with the right approach. By focusing on both physical and mental health, you can improve your situation. Remember, it's essential to communicate openly with healthcare professionals about your concerns, as they can provide tailored advice and support. Don't hesitate to reach out for help; you're not alone in this, and many young men experience similar issues.
