Strange sounds?
Hello Doctor, in the past week or two, I've noticed that whenever I lie down even slightly (not fully lying down), I feel a sensation similar to blood flow hitting the blood vessels below my heart (which corresponds with my heartbeat).
Sometimes, I can even hear a popping sound.
I am currently a high school student, going to bed around 1-2 AM, and I sleep about 6-7 hours a night.
I'm wondering if this could be related to sleep deprivation or poor posture? I found online that it might be related to heart failure or even a myocardial infarction, which makes me a bit scared.
I kindly ask for your guidance, doctor.

Dr. Wu Xueming reply Cardiology
Due to your young age and lack of chronic diseases, your risk of developing heart disease is low.
Many factors in daily life can contribute to this condition, such as emotions, stress, irregular sleep patterns, or excessive intake of caffeinated beverages.
It is advisable to adjust your lifestyle and engage in regular exercise.
However, if symptoms persist, it is still recommended to visit a hospital for an electrocardiogram (ECG) examination.

Hello! It sounds like you’re experiencing some concerning symptoms, and I can understand why you might be feeling anxious about them. Let’s break down your situation and address your concerns regarding unusual heart sounds and sensations.
Firstly, the sensation of feeling blood flow or hearing a "pounding" sound in your chest when you lie down could be related to several factors. One common cause is the position of your body. When you lie down, especially if you’re not fully horizontal, the dynamics of blood flow can change. This can sometimes amplify the sounds of your heart beating or the blood flowing through your vessels, especially if you have a heightened awareness of your body due to anxiety or other factors.
Your sleep habits could also play a significant role in how you’re feeling. Sleep deprivation can lead to increased stress levels, which may exacerbate feelings of anxiety and lead to heightened awareness of bodily sensations, including heartbeats. The recommended amount of sleep for teenagers is typically around 8-10 hours per night, and consistently getting only 6-7 hours may not be sufficient for your body’s needs. This lack of sleep can contribute to fatigue, irritability, and even physical symptoms like palpitations or unusual heart sensations.
Regarding your concerns about serious conditions like heart failure or myocardial infarction (heart attack), it’s important to note that these conditions are typically associated with a range of other symptoms, such as chest pain, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, or swelling in the legs. Given that you are a high school student and likely relatively healthy, it is less common for such serious conditions to present in this way without other significant risk factors or symptoms.
However, it’s also essential to consider posture and physical activity. Poor posture, especially if you’re slouching or putting pressure on your chest while lying down, can affect how your heart sounds and feels. Additionally, if you have been engaging in any new physical activities or exercises, this could also contribute to how your heart feels during rest.
If you continue to experience these sensations or if they worsen, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend a physical examination, and possibly an echocardiogram or an electrocardiogram (ECG) to rule out any underlying heart conditions. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to heart health.
In summary, while your symptoms could be related to sleep deprivation, body posture, or anxiety, it’s crucial to monitor them closely. If you find that they persist or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms, please seek medical advice. Taking care of your sleep hygiene, managing stress, and maintaining good posture can also help alleviate some of the sensations you’re experiencing. Remember, your health is paramount, and it’s always best to discuss any concerns with a healthcare provider who can give you personalized advice.
