The texture of the testicles?
Hello, doctor.
I would like to inquire about what the normal texture of the testicles should feel like.
I have noticed that my right testicle is larger than the left and feels firm to the touch.
When I squeeze it, there is not much elasticity, and it does not hurt.
The surface is smooth, and I can clearly feel the epididymis on top of the right testicle (while I can hardly feel the epididymis on top of the left).
I am a bit concerned that there might be something abnormal growing inside the right testicle.
When lying in bed, I feel that both testicles have shrunk and softened, but the right one still feels larger and firmer.
I would like to ask if it is normal for the testicles to become larger and firmer when standing.
Also, does the firmness of the testicles relate to the frequency of masturbation? (After masturbating today, the left testicle became smaller and softer, while the right testicle remains firm and larger.) Thank you, doctor.

Hello: It is normal for individuals to have two testicles of similar size, but there may be differences in texture.
If you have concerns, you should consult a urologist at a hospital.
The doctor will be able to assess the situation during the examination.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding the normal texture and size variations of the testicles, it's essential to recognize that individual differences can occur. The testicles, or testes, are typically oval-shaped organs that are responsible for producing sperm and hormones, primarily testosterone. Normal testicular size can vary significantly among individuals, but generally, adult testicles are about 1.5 to 2 inches in length and about 1 inch in width.
In your case, you mentioned that your right testicle feels larger and harder than the left. It is important to note that some asymmetry between the testicles is common, and one testicle may be slightly larger or hang lower than the other. However, a significant difference in size or a change in texture, such as hardness, can be a cause for concern. The hardness you describe could indicate several conditions, including but not limited to:
1. Epididymitis: This is an inflammation of the epididymis, which is the coiled tube located at the back of the testicle. It can cause swelling and tenderness.
2. Testicular Torsion: This is a medical emergency where the spermatic cord becomes twisted, cutting off blood supply to the testicle. Symptoms include sudden, severe pain and swelling.
3. Hydrocele or Spermatocele: These are fluid-filled sacs that can develop around the testicle, leading to swelling.
4. Tumors: While less common, testicular tumors can present as a hard mass within the testicle.
Regarding your observation that the testicles feel smaller and softer when lying down, this is a normal physiological response. The testicles can retract closer to the body in response to temperature changes or sexual arousal, which can make them feel firmer and larger when standing.
As for the relationship between testicular firmness and masturbation, there is no direct correlation. Masturbation does not cause the testicles to become hard or larger. However, after ejaculation, it is common for the testicles to feel softer and smaller temporarily due to the relaxation of the cremaster muscle, which controls the position of the testicles.
If you are experiencing significant changes in size, texture, or any discomfort, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough examination. They may perform a physical examination and possibly an ultrasound to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Early diagnosis and treatment are essential for any potential issues related to testicular health.
In summary, while some variations in testicular size and texture are normal, any significant changes, especially those accompanied by discomfort or pain, should be evaluated by a medical professional. Regular self-examinations can help you become familiar with your normal anatomy, making it easier to detect any changes that may require further investigation.
