Foreign body sensation in the upper throat?

Hello Doctor, I often experience nasal congestion and a sensation of post-nasal drip, which leads me to breathe through my mouth unconsciously.
I wake up in the morning with phlegm, and sometimes the phlegm is dark in color.
About a month ago, I suddenly felt a sensation of a foreign body in my throat, accompanied by dryness and phlegm, but without pain.
During the day, the symptoms are milder while sitting, but at night, when lying down, the sensation of a foreign body becomes particularly pronounced, making it difficult to relax and sleep.
I find myself repeatedly swallowing and can only alleviate the sensation by breathing through my mouth.
Could this be pharyngitis? What can I do to improve my symptoms? Thank you.

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology

Hello, the symptoms may indicate chronic pharyngitis, which is often associated with post-nasal drip or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
It is advisable to adjust your lifestyle.
If discomfort persists, it is recommended to consult an otolaryngologist or a gastroenterologist for further evaluation.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

The sensation of a foreign body in the upper throat, often accompanied by nasal congestion, postnasal drip, and phlegm, can be quite distressing. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing symptoms that could be related to several underlying conditions, including postnasal drip, allergic rhinitis, or even gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Postnasal Drip: This occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the throat. It can lead to a sensation of a lump or foreign body, especially when lying down, as gravity can cause mucus to pool. The dark-colored phlegm you mentioned could indicate the presence of irritants or allergens, or it could be due to the presence of blood or other substances that have been trapped in the mucus.

2. Allergic Rhinitis: If you have a history of nasal congestion and are breathing through your mouth, it may suggest an allergic response. Allergens can cause inflammation in the nasal passages, leading to mucus production and postnasal drip.

3. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): GERD can cause throat irritation and a sensation of a lump in the throat, especially when lying down. Acid from the stomach can irritate the throat and lead to chronic cough, throat clearing, and a feeling of something stuck.

4. Throat Inflammation: While you mentioned that there is no pain, inflammation in the throat can still cause discomfort and the sensation of a foreign body. This could be due to a viral infection, allergies, or irritants in the environment.

Remedies and Management
1. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated can thin mucus, making it easier to clear. Aim to drink plenty of water throughout the day.

2. Saline Nasal Rinse: Using a saline nasal spray or rinse can help clear nasal passages and reduce postnasal drip. This can alleviate the sensation of mucus accumulation in the throat.

3. Humidifier: Using a humidifier in your bedroom can help keep the air moist, which may reduce throat irritation and help with nasal congestion.

4. Avoid Irritants: If you are exposed to smoke, strong odors, or allergens, try to minimize your exposure. This can help reduce inflammation in your nasal passages and throat.

5. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping: Sleeping with your head elevated can help prevent mucus from pooling in the throat and reduce the sensation of a foreign body.

6. Over-the-Counter Medications: Antihistamines can help if allergies are contributing to your symptoms. Decongestants may also be beneficial for nasal congestion. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication.

7. Consult a Specialist: If symptoms persist, it may be beneficial to see an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend further tests, such as allergy testing or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.

8. Consider GERD Management: If you suspect that GERD might be contributing to your symptoms, lifestyle changes such as avoiding large meals before bedtime, reducing acidic foods, and possibly using over-the-counter antacids may be helpful.

Conclusion
The sensation of a foreign body in the throat can be caused by various factors, including postnasal drip, allergies, or GERD. Implementing the above remedies may help alleviate your symptoms. However, if your condition does not improve or worsens, it is crucial to seek medical advice for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Your health and comfort are important, and addressing these symptoms early can lead to better outcomes.
