Is a 3-Kilogram Weight Loss in Three Months Normal? Expert Insights - Family Medicine

Weight loss

Hello, I would like to consult a doctor.
Three months ago, in early May, my weight was approximately 66.5 kg.
However, yesterday I bought a scale and my weight was 63.5 kg.
Is it normal to lose 3 kg in three months? I have been eating less recently due to the hot weather, and I usually walk to and from work, which is about 4 kilometers each way.
I haven't experienced any discomfort.
Could this be related to my diet? Since the Level 3 alert, I haven't eaten many of the foods I used to eat in restaurants for a long time...
so I would like to ask for the doctor's opinion.
Is there a need for me to get checked? Thank you.

Losing 3 kilograms over a span of three months can generally be considered a normal and healthy rate of weight loss, especially if it is achieved through natural lifestyle changes such as dietary adjustments and increased physical activity. In your case, you mentioned that your weight decreased from 66.5 kg to 63.5 kg, which translates to a loss of approximately 4.5% of your body weight. This is within the range of what is typically regarded as a safe and sustainable weight loss.

Several factors can contribute to weight loss, including changes in diet, physical activity levels, and even environmental conditions. You noted that the weather has been hot, which may have led to a decrease in your appetite. It’s not uncommon for people to eat less during warmer months, as the body tends to require fewer calories when it is not expending as much energy to maintain body heat. Additionally, your routine of walking 4 kilometers each way to work adds a significant amount of physical activity to your day, which can also contribute to weight loss.

It’s important to consider whether this weight loss is intentional or unintentional. Since you mentioned that you have not experienced any discomfort or health issues, it seems that your weight loss is likely a result of your lifestyle changes rather than a sign of an underlying health problem. However, if you were to experience symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, or any other concerning signs, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.

Regarding your question about whether you should seek medical attention, it may not be necessary at this point, especially since you feel well and have made lifestyle changes that could explain the weight loss. However, if you have any concerns about your health or if the weight loss continues without any clear reason, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare provider. They can assess your overall health, review your dietary habits, and possibly conduct tests to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, a weight loss of 3 kilograms over three months can be considered normal, especially when it is achieved through healthy lifestyle changes. It’s essential to maintain a balanced diet and ensure that you are getting adequate nutrition, as excessive weight loss or restrictive eating can lead to nutritional deficiencies and other health issues. If you have further concerns or if your weight loss continues, seeking advice from a healthcare professional would be beneficial. Remember, the goal should always be to achieve and maintain a healthy weight in a way that supports your overall well-being.
