Post-Surgery Concerns: Open Wound After Hemorrhoid Surgery - Surgery

More than a week after hemorrhoid surgery, the stitches have come loose and the wound is open?

Hello Doctor, I underwent surgery for internal and external hemorrhoids a little over a week ago.
During my follow-up appointment yesterday, the doctor informed me that the wound was healing well and that I should return next week to have the stitches removed.
However, that afternoon, I experienced a sudden increase in bleeding.
While my family was assisting me with applying medication, they noticed that although the stitches were still in place, it seemed that the wound had opened up significantly, with the external hemorrhoid wound appearing very deep, resembling a large hole.
Concerned about the risk of infection, I returned for another follow-up the next day (since my primary physician was not available, I consulted another doctor).
This doctor reassured me that it was normal and that there were no signs of infection, advising me not to worry about the wound.
However, I am still feeling quite anxious, so I would like to ask if this is indeed a normal occurrence and if there are any measures I can take to address it.
Thank you very much for your help!

Hemorrhoid surgery is typically performed using absorbable sutures, so there is no need for suture removal.
If the absorbable sutures dissolve and fall out, there is no need for concern as this is a normal occurrence.
However, if the surgeon used non-absorbable sutures for specific reasons, and the wound opens before the sutures are removed, it is important to seek medical attention promptly to prevent worsening of the wound.

After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon for patients to experience concerns regarding their recovery, especially when it comes to the condition of the surgical site. In your case, it sounds like you have encountered some unexpected complications following your procedure.
Firstly, it is important to understand that surgical wounds, particularly in sensitive areas like the anal region, can be prone to complications such as bleeding or opening of the incision. The fact that your doctor indicated that the wound status was good during your follow-up visit is a positive sign, but the sudden increase in bleeding and the appearance of a deep opening in the wound can understandably cause concern.

In general, post-surgical bleeding can occur for a variety of reasons, including the natural healing process, movement, or even straining during bowel movements. If the stitches appear to have come undone, this could lead to a more significant opening in the wound, which may require further evaluation. However, it is also possible that what you are experiencing is a part of the normal healing process, especially if the bleeding has stabilized and there are no signs of infection.

In terms of management, here are some steps you can take:
1. Monitor the Wound: Keep a close eye on the wound for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. If you notice any of these symptoms, it would be prudent to seek medical attention.

2. Follow-Up Care: Since your doctor advised that the situation is normal, it is still important to follow up as scheduled for your next appointment. If you have any concerns before that time, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.

3. Avoid Straining: To minimize the risk of further complications, avoid straining during bowel movements. You may want to consider a high-fiber diet or stool softeners to help ease the process.

4. Wound Care: Follow any specific instructions given by your healthcare provider regarding wound care. Keeping the area clean and dry is essential for preventing infection.

5. Pain Management: If you are experiencing discomfort, over-the-counter pain relief may be beneficial, but consult your doctor before taking any medication.

6. Rest and Recovery: Allow your body time to heal. Avoid heavy lifting or strenuous activities that could put stress on the surgical site.

Regarding your concern about whether this is a normal phenomenon, it is not unusual for surgical wounds to have some degree of variability in healing. However, if the wound appears significantly deeper or if you have ongoing bleeding, it is essential to communicate this to your healthcare provider. They may want to reassess the wound and determine if any additional interventions are necessary.

In conclusion, while some degree of concern is warranted given the circumstances, it is also important to trust the guidance of your healthcare provider. They have the expertise to assess your situation accurately. If you continue to feel uneasy, seeking a second opinion or further clarification from your primary surgeon may provide additional peace of mind. Your recovery is paramount, and ensuring you have the right support and information is crucial for a successful healing process.
