Pain below the ribs?
Hello, doctor.
I had pain on the left side near my back a while ago, which usually occurs at night.
Recently, I've been experiencing mild pain below both sides of my rib cage.
I spend long hours sitting at the computer.
I had a check-up at the end of last month, and both my heart and lungs were fine.
About six months ago, I had a breast ultrasound that also showed no issues, but the doctor advised that I should have a check-up every six months to a year.
I would like to know if I need to go to the hospital for further examination.
Thank you.

Rib pain can be a complex issue, and understanding when to seek medical attention is crucial for proper diagnosis and treatment. Given your description of left-sided pain near the back that typically occurs at night, along with recent mild pain below both rib cages, it’s important to consider several factors.
Firstly, rib pain can arise from various causes, including musculoskeletal issues, nerve-related problems, or even referred pain from internal organs. Since you mentioned prolonged periods of sitting while using a computer, it’s possible that your pain could be related to muscle strain or tension in the back and rib area. Poor posture during long hours of sitting can lead to discomfort and pain in the thoracic region, which may explain the timing of your pain.
However, since you have also experienced bilateral rib pain, it’s essential to consider other potential causes. Conditions such as costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum), intercostal muscle strain, or even issues related to the lungs or heart could contribute to your symptoms. Although you have had recent heart and lung evaluations that were normal, it’s still wise to remain vigilant, especially if your symptoms change or worsen.
In your case, the fact that you have had a breast ultrasound six months ago and were advised to have regular check-ups is a good practice. Regular monitoring is essential, especially if you have any risk factors or family history of breast or other related conditions. While your previous tests were normal, any new or persistent symptoms should not be ignored.
Here are some indicators that suggest it may be time to seek medical attention:
1. Worsening Pain: If your rib pain intensifies or becomes more frequent, it’s essential to consult a healthcare professional.
2. Associated Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, fever, or unexplained weight loss, you should seek immediate medical attention.
3. Duration of Symptoms: If your rib pain persists for more than a few weeks without improvement, it’s advisable to get it checked out.
4. Impact on Daily Activities: If the pain interferes with your daily activities or sleep, it’s a sign that you should consult a doctor.
5. Change in Symptoms: Any new symptoms, such as changes in the nature of the pain (e.g., sharp, dull, or radiating), should prompt a visit to a healthcare provider.
Given your situation, it would be prudent to schedule an appointment with a healthcare professional, such as a primary care physician or a specialist in musculoskeletal disorders. They may recommend further imaging studies, such as X-rays or an MRI, to rule out any underlying conditions. Additionally, they can provide guidance on pain management strategies, which may include physical therapy, medication, or lifestyle modifications to alleviate your symptoms.
In summary, while your rib pain may be related to muscle strain or tension, it’s essential to remain vigilant and seek medical attention if your symptoms worsen or if you experience any concerning signs. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
