Prostatitis
Hello Doctor: Recently, I have been experiencing a burning sensation in my urethra when using the restroom, and after urination, I also feel discomfort and pain in my lower abdomen and around the anus.
I visited a clinic and was diagnosed with prostatitis.
After more than a month of treatment, I still have discomfort, but my urine tests have all come back normal.
I went to a larger hospital, and the urine tests there were also normal.
The doctor explained that I might be experiencing high levels of stress and did not prescribe any medication.
However, after one or two weeks following the visit, the burning sensation and slight pain returned.
I would like to ask the doctor: 1.
How can I alleviate these symptoms? 2.
I have a habit of masturbation; will this exacerbate my symptoms? 3.
Are there any lifestyle habits or activities I should avoid? Thank you, Doctor.

More Info
Prostatitis, particularly chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS), can be a challenging condition to manage due to its multifaceted nature. Your symptoms of burning during urination, discomfort in the lower abdomen, and anal area pain are indeed consistent with prostatitis. The fact that your urine tests have come back normal is also common, as many cases of prostatitis are non-bacterial in nature. Here’s a comprehensive overview of your concerns:
1. Improving Symptoms
To alleviate your symptoms, consider the following strategies:
- Hydration: Drink plenty of water to help dilute your urine, which can reduce irritation in the bladder and urethra.
- Warm Baths: Soaking in a warm bath can help relax pelvic muscles and alleviate pain. Some patients find relief from using a heating pad on the pelvic area.
- Pelvic Floor Exercises: Engaging in pelvic floor exercises (Kegel exercises) can help strengthen the pelvic muscles, potentially reducing discomfort.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain. However, consult your doctor before starting any new medication, especially if you are already on other treatments.
- Stress Management: Since stress can exacerbate symptoms, consider relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises.
- Dietary Adjustments: Avoid irritants such as caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods, and acidic foods, which can aggravate bladder symptoms. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may be beneficial.
2. Impact of Masturbation
Masturbation is generally considered a normal sexual activity and does not inherently worsen prostatitis symptoms. However, if you notice that your symptoms flare up after masturbation, it may be worth moderating the frequency or technique. Some individuals find that excessive or aggressive sexual activity can lead to increased pelvic discomfort. Listening to your body and adjusting accordingly is key.
3. Lifestyle Considerations
In terms of lifestyle modifications, consider the following:
- Regular Exercise: Engage in regular physical activity, which can improve overall health and reduce stress. Activities like walking, swimming, or cycling can be beneficial.
- Sleep Hygiene: Ensure you are getting adequate sleep. Poor sleep can exacerbate stress and discomfort.
- Avoid Prolonged Sitting: If your job involves sitting for long periods, take regular breaks to stand and stretch. This can help alleviate pressure on the pelvic area.
- Routine Check-ups: Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are essential to monitor your condition and adjust treatment as necessary.
- Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing loose-fitting clothing can help reduce pressure on the pelvic area.
Conclusion
Chronic prostatitis can be a frustrating condition due to its persistent nature and the variability of symptoms. While it may take time to find the right combination of treatments and lifestyle changes that work for you, many patients find relief through a holistic approach that includes both medical treatment and lifestyle modifications. Always communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your symptoms and any changes you experience, as they can help tailor a management plan that suits your needs. If symptoms persist or worsen, further evaluation may be necessary to rule out other underlying conditions.
