The shape of a mole?
Hello Doctor, in June of this year, I suddenly noticed an irregular mole on my back, approximately 0.6 cm in size and flat to the touch.
I hadn't paid much attention to it before, so I'm not sure how long it has been there.
I visited a doctor in August because I was concerned it might be a problematic mole.
The doctor examined it visually and said it appeared to be a normal mole and advised me to just monitor it.
I would like to ask if it is sufficient to just observe it, or should I go for another check-up?

Dr. Hong Yuanbin reply Internal Medicine
Hello, based on the current image, this mole does appear to be a typical mole.
It is recommended to monitor it, primarily paying attention to its size, shape, surface elevation, and any discharge.
If there are any unusual changes, then medical attention would be necessary.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
When it comes to irregular moles, it's essential to understand the characteristics that may indicate a potential issue. The mole you described, measuring approximately 0.6 cm and being irregular in shape, raises some concerns, especially since it appeared suddenly. While your doctor assessed it as benign and suggested observation, there are specific guidelines to consider when determining whether further medical advice is necessary.
Characteristics of Concern
The ABCDE rule is a helpful tool for evaluating moles:
- Asymmetry: If one half of the mole does not match the other half in size, shape, or color, this could be a warning sign.
- Border: Irregular, scalloped, or poorly defined edges are concerning.
- Color: A variety of colors (brown, black, tan, red, white, or blue) within the same mole can indicate a problem.
- Diameter: Moles larger than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser) are more likely to be problematic, although some melanomas can be smaller.
- Evolving: Any change in size, shape, color, or elevation, or any new symptom such as bleeding, itching, or crusting, is a reason to seek further evaluation.
When to Seek Medical Advice
Given that your mole is irregular and has appeared suddenly, it is prudent to keep a close watch on it. If you notice any changes in the mole's appearance or if it begins to itch, bleed, or become painful, you should seek medical advice immediately. Even if the mole appears stable, it may be worth scheduling a follow-up appointment with a dermatologist for a more thorough examination, especially if you have a family history of skin cancer or personal risk factors such as fair skin, a history of sunburns, or numerous moles.
Importance of Regular Skin Checks
Regular self-examinations of your skin can help you monitor any changes in existing moles or the appearance of new ones. It's recommended to perform these checks monthly. If you have any concerns, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional. Dermatologists can perform a dermatoscopic examination, which allows for a more detailed view of the mole and can help in making a more accurate diagnosis.
Conclusion
In summary, while your doctor has assessed the mole as benign, it is essential to remain vigilant. If you have any doubts or if the mole changes in any way, it is advisable to seek a second opinion or a follow-up appointment with a dermatologist. Early detection is crucial in managing skin conditions, particularly when it comes to potential skin cancers. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself in seeking further evaluation.
