Epididymitis
Hello, doctor.
About a week ago, while lying down at home for a long time, I suddenly felt redness and pain in my right testicle that lasted for a long time.
After 2 or 3 days, I tried some DIY remedies, and then it felt dull.
Later, I applied some anti-inflammatory cream, and the pain has since subsided.
Could you please explain why I suddenly experienced testicular pain? I usually have sexual activity once a week; is that too frequent? Should I take a break for a while before resuming? Currently, I feel no pain at all.
Thank you.
Matt, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/08/24
Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology
Hello: 1) Redness may be a cleanliness issue; if the testicles are swollen, seek medical attention.
2) The frequency varies by individual; it cannot be classified as too much or normal.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Testicular pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its causes, treatment options, and frequency of occurrence is essential for maintaining reproductive health. Based on your description, it seems you experienced acute pain in your right testicle after prolonged pressure from lying down. This type of pain can arise from various factors, and I will outline some potential causes, treatment options, and considerations regarding the frequency of such occurrences.
Causes of Testicular Pain
1. Trauma or Injury: Prolonged pressure or trauma to the testicles can lead to pain and discomfort. This is particularly relevant if you were lying in a position that exerted pressure on the area.
2. Infection: Conditions such as epididymitis (inflammation of the epididymis) or orchitis (inflammation of the testicle) can cause pain and swelling. These infections can be bacterial or viral and may present with redness and tenderness.
3. Torsion: Testicular torsion is a medical emergency where the spermatic cord becomes twisted, cutting off blood supply to the testicle. This condition typically presents with sudden, severe pain and requires immediate medical attention.
4. Hernia: An inguinal hernia can cause discomfort in the groin and testicular area, especially when straining or lifting heavy objects.
5. Varicocele or Hydrocele: These conditions involve abnormal blood vessels or fluid accumulation around the testicle, which can lead to a feeling of heaviness or dull pain.
Treatment Options
Since you mentioned that the pain subsided after applying anti-inflammatory medication, it suggests that your symptoms may have been related to minor inflammation or irritation. Here are some general treatment options:
- Rest: Avoiding activities that may exacerbate the pain, such as prolonged pressure on the testicles, can help.
- Ice Application: Applying ice packs to the affected area can reduce swelling and alleviate pain.
- Anti-inflammatory Medications: Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or naproxen can help manage pain and inflammation.
- Medical Evaluation: If the pain recurs or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, swelling, or changes in urination, it is crucial to seek medical evaluation to rule out infections or other serious conditions.
Frequency Concerns
Regarding the frequency of experiencing testicular pain, having such pain once a week may not be typical and could indicate an underlying issue. While occasional discomfort may not be a cause for concern, recurrent pain warrants further investigation. It is essential to monitor the situation:
- Keep a Journal: Note when the pain occurs, its intensity, duration, and any associated activities or symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
- Consult a Specialist: If the pain persists or increases in frequency, consider consulting a urologist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend imaging studies, such as an ultrasound, to assess for any underlying conditions.
- Lifestyle Adjustments: If you find that certain activities or positions lead to discomfort, consider modifying them to prevent recurrence.
Conclusion
In summary, while your recent experience with testicular pain may have resolved, it is essential to remain vigilant about any future occurrences. Understanding the potential causes and treatment options can help you manage your symptoms effectively. If the pain recurs or you have concerns about the frequency, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Regular check-ups with a healthcare provider can ensure that any underlying issues are addressed promptly, promoting your overall reproductive health.
