The condom got stuck at the vaginal opening?

The last menstrual period was from July 31 to August 6.
I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on August 26, and we used a condom throughout.
However, after he ejaculated, approximately two-thirds of the condom got stuck in the vagina, but he immediately pulled out.
We checked the condom with water to confirm that it did not break.
Doctor, is there a chance of pregnancy in this situation? Thank you, doctor.

Amy, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/08/26

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, based on your description, there is a possibility of pregnancy, as the failure rate of correctly using condoms is still around 5%.
Generally, it is not recommended to rely solely on condoms for contraception.
I suggest that if your period is a week late, you should take a urine test to check for pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

When it comes to the concern of whether you can get pregnant if a condom gets stuck inside, there are several factors to consider. First and foremost, it’s important to understand how condoms work and their effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.

Condoms are a barrier method of contraception that, when used correctly, are highly effective at preventing both pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). The key to their effectiveness lies in proper usage, which includes ensuring that the condom is put on before any genital contact and that it remains in place throughout the sexual act.

In your case, since you mentioned that the condom was intact and did not break during intercourse, the likelihood of pregnancy is significantly reduced. However, the fact that a portion of the condom remained inside the vagina could raise some concerns. Here are a few points to consider:
1. Sperm Presence: If the condom was intact and there was no leakage, the chances of sperm entering the vagina are minimal. However, if there was any spillage of semen during the withdrawal process, there could be a risk of pregnancy.

2. Timing of Ovulation: The timing of your menstrual cycle also plays a crucial role in determining the likelihood of pregnancy. If you had unprotected intercourse during your fertile window (typically around ovulation), the risk of pregnancy increases. However, if you are not in your fertile window, the chances are lower.

3. Immediate Action: If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, there are options available. Emergency contraception (like Plan B) can be taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse to reduce the risk of pregnancy. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible.

4. Consulting a Healthcare Provider: Since a portion of the condom was left inside, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can ensure that the condom is safely removed and check for any potential complications, such as infections.

5. Future Prevention: If you are sexually active and want to avoid unintended pregnancies, consider discussing other contraceptive methods with your healthcare provider. Options include hormonal birth control, IUDs, or other barrier methods that may suit your lifestyle better.

In summary, while the risk of pregnancy in your situation appears low due to the intact condom, it is essential to monitor your menstrual cycle and consult with a healthcare professional for peace of mind and to address any concerns about the condom that was left inside. Remember, effective communication with your partner about contraception and safe sex practices is crucial in preventing unintended pregnancies and STIs.
