Various sensations of numbness and lightheadedness?

Hello Doctor, recently I have been experiencing various sensations of numbness and slight dizziness after feeling a bit anxious, which can last up to half an hour before subsiding.
Initially, I feel mentally alert but slightly dizzy and sleepy, with normal breathing, although I have a tendency to take deep breaths.
I also experience numbness on the sides of my head near the back, as well as on my forehead and nasal bridge.
Gradually, I feel numbness extending from my little fingers up to halfway along my arms, and my little fingers sometimes feel like they want to contract.
Next, I experience numbness on both sides of my abdomen, accompanied by a similar contracting sensation, and eventually, my calves also feel numb.
My smartwatch records my heart rate at around 80-100 beats per minute while at rest.
Bright lights can feel dazzling, and I generally feel uncomfortable, prompting me to stand up and walk slowly, take deep breaths, and occasionally sit down for a moment before getting up and walking slowly again.
I also try drinking water to see if it helps alleviate the symptoms.
Sometimes, engaging in other activities or chatting with someone helps a bit, but it still takes about half an hour for the symptoms to gradually subside.
Doctor, how can I resolve or prevent this situation? Thank you.

Hello, Chang-Feng! Most of these symptoms are caused by emotional stress, but it is essential to rule out neurological disorders.
I recommend visiting a neurology clinic for an examination!

Numbness and dizziness can be concerning symptoms that may arise from various underlying causes. Based on your description, it seems that these symptoms occur after moments of anxiety or stress, which suggests a possible connection to anxiety-related disorders. However, it is essential to consider other potential causes as well.

Possible Causes
1. Anxiety and Panic Attacks: Your symptoms, including numbness, dizziness, and a feeling of wanting to sleep, can be indicative of anxiety or panic attacks. During such episodes, the body can react with hyperventilation, leading to a decrease in carbon dioxide levels in the blood, which can cause tingling sensations (paresthesia) and dizziness.

2. Hyperventilation Syndrome: This occurs when you breathe too quickly or deeply, often due to anxiety. It can lead to symptoms such as lightheadedness, tingling in the fingers and around the mouth, and even a sense of impending doom.

3. Nerve Compression or Irritation: The tingling sensations in your fingers and arms could also suggest nerve compression, possibly from poor posture or repetitive movements. Conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome or cervical radiculopathy could lead to similar symptoms.

4. Circulatory Issues: Although less likely given your description, issues with blood circulation can also lead to numbness and dizziness. This could be due to vascular conditions or even dehydration.

5. Neurological Conditions: While less common, persistent numbness and dizziness could indicate neurological issues, such as multiple sclerosis or transient ischemic attacks (TIAs). However, these conditions typically present with additional symptoms.

Recommendations for Management and Prevention
1. Breathing Techniques: If your symptoms are related to anxiety, practicing controlled breathing techniques can help. Try inhaling deeply through your nose for a count of four, holding for a count of four, and exhaling slowly through your mouth for a count of four. This can help regulate your breathing and reduce hyperventilation.

2. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Engaging in mindfulness practices, such as meditation or yoga, can help manage anxiety levels. These practices promote relaxation and can reduce the frequency and intensity of anxiety-related symptoms.

3. Physical Activity: Regular exercise can improve overall physical and mental health. It can help reduce anxiety and improve circulation, which may alleviate some of your symptoms.

4. Posture Awareness: Pay attention to your posture, especially if you spend long hours sitting. Ensure that your workstation is ergonomically set up to prevent nerve compression.

5. Hydration and Nutrition: Ensure you are adequately hydrated and consuming a balanced diet. Dehydration can exacerbate dizziness and other symptoms.

6. Consult a Healthcare Professional: Given the complexity of your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend tests such as blood work, imaging studies, or referrals to specialists (e.g., neurologists or psychologists) to rule out any serious conditions.

7. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their duration, and any associated activities or stressors. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.

Conclusion
While your symptoms may be related to anxiety, it is crucial to rule out other potential causes. Implementing stress management techniques, maintaining good posture, and staying hydrated can help mitigate your symptoms. However, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is essential to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. If your symptoms worsen or become more frequent, seek medical attention promptly.
