Yellowish-white coating on the back of the tongue?
Hello Doctor: Last week I had tonsillitis and took antibiotics, ibuprofen, and Pepcid for three days.
After finishing the medication, my tonsils are no longer inflamed, but the back of my throat is still a bit red, and I suddenly developed a yellowish-white coating on my tongue.
Additionally, after eating some takeout last week, my stomach feels a bit bloated, but it’s not painful.
I would like to ask if these symptoms indicate gastritis? I have Omeprazole purchased in the U.S.
at home; can I take it?

Dr. Zheng Jueyi reply Otolaryngology
Hello, if there is no obvious stomach pain, you can drink more water and observe your condition.
If discomfort persists, you may take over-the-counter antacids.
If there is no significant improvement, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation and treatment.
Wishing you safety and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
The presence of a yellow-white coating on the tongue following a bout of tonsillitis can be attributed to several factors, including the aftermath of the infection itself, the medications used, and dietary choices. After experiencing tonsillitis, it is not uncommon for the oral cavity to exhibit changes, including alterations in the appearance of the tongue.
Tonsillitis, an inflammation of the tonsils, often leads to symptoms such as sore throat, difficulty swallowing, and fever. The treatment typically involves antibiotics if a bacterial infection is suspected, along with supportive care such as pain relievers like ibuprofen. While these medications can help alleviate symptoms, they can also disrupt the natural balance of bacteria in the mouth and throat, potentially leading to an overgrowth of yeast or other organisms, which can manifest as a yellow-white coating on the tongue.
The yellow-white coating could also be a sign of oral thrush, a fungal infection caused by Candida species, especially if you have been on antibiotics. Antibiotics can kill off beneficial bacteria that normally keep yeast in check, allowing for an overgrowth. Additionally, poor oral hygiene, dehydration, or dry mouth can contribute to the development of a coated tongue.
Regarding your concern about gastric inflammation, the symptoms you describe—such as a feeling of bloating—could be related to dietary choices, particularly if you consumed rich or spicy foods while recovering from tonsillitis. However, the yellow-white coating on your tongue is not a direct indicator of gastric inflammation. It is essential to differentiate between oral symptoms and gastrointestinal issues, as they may not necessarily be linked.
As for the use of Omeprazole, it is a proton pump inhibitor that reduces stomach acid production and is typically used to treat conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or peptic ulcers. If you are experiencing bloating or discomfort, it may be beneficial to take Omeprazole, but it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new medication, especially since you have recently been on antibiotics and other medications. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current symptoms.
In summary, the yellow-white coating on your tongue is likely a result of the recent tonsillitis and the antibiotics you took. It is advisable to maintain good oral hygiene, stay hydrated, and monitor your symptoms. If the coating persists or if you experience worsening symptoms, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation. They may recommend antifungal treatment if oral thrush is suspected or provide guidance on managing any gastrointestinal symptoms you may have.
