Heel Fractures: Is Tingling Normal During Recovery? - Orthopedics

Calcaneal fracture

Hello, Doctor.
I was in a car accident at the beginning of last month, which resulted in a fracture of the heel bone in my left foot.
The doctor said that surgery is not necessary and that I just need to have a cast to stabilize it until the bone heals.
However, in the past few days, I have been feeling a tingling sensation in the sole of my foot.
Is this normal?

Mm, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/04

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

It should be considered normal.
Typically, a follow-up X-ray is required after a certain period to check if the fracture has healed, usually around 8 to 12 weeks.
If the fracture is non-displaced, then after healing, there are usually no residual complications.

Heel fractures, particularly those involving the calcaneus (the heel bone), can be quite complex due to the bone's structure and the surrounding soft tissues. When a heel fracture occurs, it often leads to a variety of symptoms during the recovery process, including pain, swelling, and sometimes unusual sensations such as tingling or a "pins and needles" feeling.

The tingling sensation you are experiencing in your heel during recovery can be attributed to several factors. First, it is essential to understand that when a bone is fractured, the surrounding tissues, including nerves, can also be affected. Swelling and inflammation from the injury can put pressure on nearby nerves, leading to sensations like tingling. Additionally, if the fracture has caused any misalignment or if the healing process is affecting the surrounding soft tissues, this can also contribute to nerve irritation.

Another possibility is that the immobilization of your foot in a cast may lead to changes in circulation or nerve function. Prolonged immobilization can sometimes result in temporary nerve compression or irritation, which may manifest as tingling. This is often a normal part of the healing process, but it is crucial to monitor the symptoms.

While tingling can be a normal sensation during the healing of a heel fracture, it is essential to differentiate between normal recovery sensations and signs of complications. If the tingling is accompanied by severe pain, increased swelling, changes in skin color, or if you experience any loss of function in your foot, it is vital to contact your healthcare provider immediately. These could be signs of complications such as compartment syndrome or issues related to the healing process that may require further evaluation.

In terms of recovery, heel fractures can take several weeks to months to heal, depending on the severity of the fracture and the individual's overall health. During this time, it is crucial to follow your doctor's instructions regarding weight-bearing activities and rehabilitation exercises. Gradually increasing mobility and strength through physical therapy can help improve circulation and nerve function, potentially alleviating tingling sensations.

In summary, while tingling during the recovery from a heel fracture can be a normal occurrence, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your symptoms. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider will help ensure that your recovery is on track and that any potential complications are addressed promptly. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or the healing process, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for further guidance.
