Can I get pregnant?

Hello, doctor.
My girlfriend's period is expected on September 18.
We engaged in mutual manual stimulation from August 25 to September 4, and we have not had sexual intercourse.
Each time we cleaned ourselves with wet wipes and 75% alcohol, but I am still worried that there might be sperm on my hands that could have entered her vagina.
My girlfriend mentioned feeling nauseous and sleepy on September 5 and 6.
Could this be a sign of pregnancy, or is it simply related to her ovulation period (as she mentioned she hasn't experienced this before)? Are there any documented cases in Taiwan of pregnancy occurring from fingers that came into contact with semen and then entered the vagina?

Lin a, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/06

Hello, it is unlikely that you are pregnant; just monitor the situation.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant from finger contact, it's important to understand the mechanics of conception and the risks involved. Pregnancy typically occurs when sperm fertilizes an egg, which usually happens through vaginal intercourse. However, there are some nuances to consider regarding finger contact and the potential for pregnancy.

Firstly, sperm must be deposited in the vagina or near the vaginal opening for there to be a chance of fertilization. If your fingers have come into contact with semen and then subsequently inserted into the vagina, there is a theoretical risk of pregnancy, albeit a very low one. Sperm can survive outside the body for a short period, but they are not very resilient and typically do not survive long on surfaces or in the air. The likelihood of sperm being transferred from fingers to the vagina in a way that leads to pregnancy is quite low, especially if there was no direct ejaculation into the vagina.

Regarding the symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing, such as nausea and fatigue, these can indeed be early signs of pregnancy. However, they can also be attributed to a variety of other factors, including hormonal changes, stress, or even the onset of her menstrual cycle. It's not uncommon for women to experience different symptoms during their menstrual cycle, especially if they are approaching ovulation or menstruation.
In terms of documented cases, while there are anecdotal reports of pregnancy occurring from indirect contact with sperm, these instances are rare. Most medical literature suggests that the chances of becoming pregnant from finger contact alone are minimal, particularly if proper hygiene practices were followed, such as cleaning hands with wipes or alcohol.

If your girlfriend's period is expected on September 18 and she is experiencing symptoms that are unusual for her, it might be a good idea for her to take a pregnancy test. Home pregnancy tests are quite accurate and can provide clarity. If she is concerned about her symptoms or if the test is positive, consulting a healthcare provider would be advisable for further evaluation and guidance.

In summary, while it is theoretically possible to get pregnant from finger contact if sperm is transferred, the likelihood is very low. The symptoms your girlfriend is experiencing could be related to various factors, and the best course of action would be to take a pregnancy test and consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
