Right ear tinnitus?
Six months ago, I experienced a muffled sound in my right ear due to earwax adhering to the eardrum.
After softening and removing the earwax, I have since had a persistent high-frequency noise in my right ear, which becomes louder when I take a deep breath.
Currently, it does not affect my sleep, but does this condition require treatment?

It is recommended to visit an otolaryngology clinic for hearing and tympanometry tests to determine the cause before deciding if further examination is necessary.
Wishing you good health.

Persistent high-pitched noise in the ear, commonly referred to as tinnitus, can be a concerning symptom, especially when it persists over time. In your case, the high-frequency noise in your right ear, which has been ongoing since you had earwax removed, may be related to several underlying factors. While it is good to hear that this noise does not currently affect your sleep, it is essential to consider the potential implications and when to seek treatment.
Tinnitus can arise from various causes, including exposure to loud noises, earwax buildup, ear infections, age-related hearing loss, and even certain medications. In your situation, since the noise began after the removal of earwax, it is possible that the process may have disturbed the delicate structures of the ear, leading to temporary or persistent tinnitus. Additionally, if you have experienced any changes in your hearing or if the noise becomes more pronounced, it may indicate an underlying issue that requires further evaluation.
It is crucial to monitor the characteristics of the noise. If the high-pitched sound becomes more frequent, louder, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as hearing loss, ear pain, or a feeling of fullness in the ear, it is advisable to seek medical attention. An ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist can perform a thorough examination, including a hearing test, to determine if there are any underlying issues contributing to your tinnitus.
In terms of treatment, if the tinnitus is determined to be related to a specific cause, such as an ear infection or eustachian tube dysfunction, addressing that underlying issue may alleviate the symptoms. For instance, if the eustachian tube is not functioning correctly, it can lead to pressure changes in the ear, which may contribute to the perception of noise. In such cases, treatments may include nasal decongestants, antihistamines, or other medications to improve eustachian tube function.
If no specific cause is identified, and the tinnitus persists, there are various management strategies available. These may include sound therapy, which uses background noise to mask the tinnitus, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help manage the emotional response to tinnitus, and lifestyle changes such as stress management techniques. Additionally, avoiding loud noises and using ear protection in noisy environments can help prevent further irritation to the auditory system.
In summary, while your current situation may not require immediate treatment, it is essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your symptoms. If the high-pitched noise persists or worsens, or if you experience any additional symptoms, it would be prudent to consult with an ENT specialist for a comprehensive evaluation. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and help manage any potential underlying conditions effectively.
