Arrhythmia BNT
Hello doctor, I am 43 years old and I have arrhythmia, which occurs two to three times a day, lasting for 2 to 3 hours each time.
I have seen a doctor who diagnosed me with premature ventricular contractions and mitral valve prolapse.
Therefore, I am currently taking Rhythmol and Cardizem in the morning and evening.
I would like to ask if I can receive the BNT vaccine (since I cannot wait for the AZ vaccine).
Also, do I need to stop my medications before and after the vaccination? Thank you.
Vicky, 40~49 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/13
Dr. Huang Yinghe reply Cardiology
Hello: There are no contraindications for your condition and medication regarding the COVID vaccine.
It is recommended that you continue taking your medication if you decide to get vaccinated.
In principle, if you do not have any acute discomfort, you can proceed with the vaccination.
A physician will also assist in evaluating your situation on-site before the vaccination, so please indicate your condition on the self-assessment form for the physician's awareness.

More Info
Yes, you can receive the BNT vaccine even if you have arrhythmia and mitral valve prolapse. Your medical history of experiencing premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and having mitral valve prolapse does not contraindicate vaccination against COVID-19. It is essential to maintain communication with your healthcare provider regarding your specific health conditions and any medications you are taking.
When considering vaccination, it is crucial to evaluate the overall benefits versus the risks. The BNT vaccine, also known as the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, has been shown to be safe and effective for the general population, including individuals with underlying health conditions such as arrhythmias. The vaccine's benefits in preventing severe illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19 outweigh the potential risks associated with vaccination, especially in the context of the ongoing pandemic.
Regarding your medications, it is generally recommended to continue taking your prescribed medications, such as the ones for your arrhythmia and mitral valve prolapse, unless your healthcare provider advises otherwise. Stopping medications without medical guidance can lead to adverse effects and exacerbate your condition. It is advisable to inform the healthcare provider administering the vaccine about your current medications and health status, as they will conduct a thorough assessment before vaccination.
In addition, if you experience any acute symptoms or changes in your condition, it is essential to consult your healthcare provider before proceeding with vaccination. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.
After receiving the vaccine, you may experience some common side effects, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue, headache, or mild fever. These side effects are typically short-lived and resolve within a few days. However, if you notice any unusual or severe symptoms, such as significant changes in your heart rhythm or other concerning signs, you should seek medical attention promptly.
In summary, individuals with arrhythmia and mitral valve prolapse can safely receive the BNT vaccine. It is crucial to continue your prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your healthcare provider. Always communicate openly with your healthcare team about your health conditions and any concerns you may have regarding vaccination. Your health and safety are paramount, and your healthcare provider is there to support you in making informed decisions about your health.
