Discomfort in the lateral chest area?
Hello Doctor: On the evening of September 11th, I felt discomfort on the left side of my accessory breast, experiencing a cramping sensation.
The pain was localized and precise, but as of now, September 14th, it has changed to discomfort when pressure is applied.
My left upper arm also experiences pain and numbness extending to my palm.
Additionally, I started my menstrual period on September 13th, and I'm unsure if this is related.
On the evening of September 14th, I felt shortness of breath, needing to take deep breaths to feel comfortable.
I researched the causes and found that it might be related to anxiety during my menstrual period, as I have been feeling overwhelmed by the not-so-good results I've found over the past few days.
I currently smoke about five cigarettes a day, and I'm wondering if that could also be a factor.
Lastly, I would like to know if I should seek medical evaluation, considering this is my first experience with these symptoms during my menstrual period and whether it is normal.

More Info
Understanding discomfort in the left chest can be concerning, especially when accompanied by other symptoms such as arm pain, tingling, and difficulty breathing. Given your description of the discomfort starting on September 11 and evolving over the following days, it is essential to consider various potential causes and when to seek medical help.
Potential Causes of Left Chest Discomfort
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: The pain you describe could be related to musculoskeletal problems, such as muscle strain or costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum). This type of pain often worsens with movement or pressure and can be localized.
2. Cardiac Concerns: While less common in younger individuals, chest pain can sometimes indicate heart-related issues, such as angina or even a heart attack. Symptoms like pain radiating to the left arm, shortness of breath, and discomfort that worsens with exertion are particularly concerning.
3. Gastrointestinal Problems: Conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or esophageal spasms can also cause chest discomfort that may mimic cardiac pain. This is often accompanied by symptoms like heartburn or regurgitation.
4. Anxiety and Stress: Emotional factors can manifest physically, leading to chest tightness or discomfort. Anxiety can also exacerbate the perception of pain and lead to hyperventilation, which may cause feelings of breathlessness.
5. Hormonal Changes: Since you mentioned that your menstrual period started on September 13, hormonal fluctuations can lead to various physical symptoms, including breast tenderness and changes in pain perception. However, it is less likely to cause significant chest pain.
When to Seek Medical Help
Given the symptoms you are experiencing, especially the combination of chest discomfort, arm pain, and difficulty breathing, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. Here are some specific indicators that warrant immediate evaluation:
- Severe or worsening chest pain: If the pain becomes severe or does not improve with rest.
- Radiating pain: If you experience pain that radiates to the arm, neck, jaw, or back.
- Shortness of breath: If you have difficulty breathing or feel like you cannot catch your breath.
- Associated symptoms: If you experience sweating, nausea, dizziness, or fainting.
Smoking and Its Impact
You mentioned that you smoke about five cigarettes a day. Smoking is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease and can exacerbate respiratory issues. It can also contribute to anxiety and stress, which may further complicate your symptoms. Reducing or quitting smoking can significantly improve your overall health and reduce the risk of heart-related issues.
Conclusion
In summary, while some of your symptoms may be related to musculoskeletal issues or hormonal changes, the combination of chest discomfort, arm pain, and difficulty breathing is concerning. It is essential to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation, which may include a physical examination, an electrocardiogram (ECG), or imaging studies to rule out any serious conditions. Do not hesitate to seek help, especially if your symptoms worsen or if you feel anxious about your health. Your well-being is paramount, and timely medical intervention can provide peace of mind and appropriate care.
