Sudden weight gain..?

Hello: My father is 60 years old, and his weight has usually been around 54 to 55 kilograms.
However, in the past few days, his weight suddenly increased to 57 kilograms.
Additionally, in the last couple of days, he has noticed some swelling under his eyes, particularly in the left eye.
When I asked him, he mentioned it might be due to water retention in his abdomen, and he feels he has gained some weight recently.
My father has a habit of taking traditional Chinese medicine, and recently he has been taking some herbal powders for his back pain.
I'm wondering if this weight gain is normal.
Could you please help me with this? Thank you!

Kidney disease and proteinuria 2.
Hyperaldosteronism 3.
Side effects of steroids.
Please advise him to go to a major hospital for examination.

More Info

Sudden weight gain in seniors can be concerning and may indicate underlying health issues. In your father's case, the increase from 54-55 kg to 57 kg over a short period, along with symptoms like swollen eyelids, could suggest several potential causes that warrant further investigation.

Possible Causes of Sudden Weight Gain
1. Fluid Retention (Edema): One of the most common reasons for sudden weight gain, especially in older adults, is fluid retention. This can be due to various factors, including heart problems, kidney issues, or even certain medications. The swelling around the eyes (periorbital edema) your father is experiencing could be a sign of fluid retention. Conditions like congestive heart failure or kidney disease can lead to excess fluid accumulation in the body.

2. Dietary Changes: Although you mentioned that your father has not changed his diet significantly, the introduction of new herbal medications could potentially affect his weight. Some herbal remedies can lead to water retention or may contain ingredients that influence metabolism or appetite.

3. Hormonal Changes: As people age, hormonal changes can affect body composition and fluid balance. Conditions such as hypothyroidism can lead to weight gain and fluid retention. It's important to consider whether your father has had any recent thyroid function tests.

4. Medications: If your father is taking any new medications or herbal supplements, it's essential to review their side effects. Some medications can cause weight gain as a side effect, particularly those that affect metabolism or fluid balance.

5. Physical Activity: A decrease in physical activity, whether due to pain (like his reported back pain) or other factors, can contribute to weight gain. If he has been less active, this could lead to changes in body composition and weight.

Recommendations
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: Given the sudden nature of the weight gain and the associated symptoms, it is crucial for your father to see a healthcare provider. A thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly blood tests, can help identify any underlying conditions.

2. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms that may arise, such as shortness of breath, increased fatigue, or changes in urination. These can provide valuable information to healthcare providers.

3. Review Medications: Discuss with his doctor any herbal supplements or medications he is currently taking. It may be beneficial to consult a pharmacist or a healthcare professional knowledgeable about herbal medicine to assess potential side effects.

4. Diet and Lifestyle: Encourage your father to maintain a balanced diet and engage in regular physical activity, as tolerated. This can help manage weight and improve overall health.

5. Hydration: Ensure he is adequately hydrated, as dehydration can sometimes lead to fluid retention. However, if he has kidney issues, fluid intake should be monitored as per medical advice.

Conclusion
Sudden weight gain in seniors is not something to be taken lightly, especially when accompanied by other symptoms like swelling. It is essential to approach this situation with caution and seek medical advice to rule out any serious health concerns. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and help manage any underlying conditions effectively.
