Breast asymmetry during menstruation?
Hello doctor, I am currently on the third day of my menstrual period.
Two days before my period started, I experienced noticeable tenderness in my left axillary breast tissue, and when pressed, I felt numbness from my left upper arm down to my hand, along with soreness in my upper arm.
Now, the issue is that the outer area of my left breast feels uncomfortable, while there is no discomfort in the middle.
Today, I noticed that my left breast has suddenly become firmer, while my right breast feels like it did before, as if I weren't wearing a bra.
I would like to know if these issues are related to my menstrual cycle.
Thank you for your response.

Breast size discrepancies and discomfort during menstruation are common concerns among individuals with breast tissue. The symptoms you are experiencing, including tenderness in the left breast and a noticeable difference in size between the left and right breasts, can indeed be related to hormonal fluctuations that occur during your menstrual cycle.
During the menstrual cycle, particularly in the luteal phase (the time between ovulation and the start of menstruation), the body experiences an increase in estrogen and progesterone levels. These hormones can cause the breast tissue to swell and retain fluid, leading to a feeling of fullness or heaviness in the breasts. This is often referred to as cyclical mastalgia, which is breast pain that correlates with the menstrual cycle. The tenderness you feel in your left breast, along with the discomfort radiating to your left arm, may be attributed to this hormonal influence.
The discrepancy in breast size that you are observing can also be a result of hormonal changes. It is not uncommon for one breast to feel fuller or larger than the other during this time. Factors such as fluid retention, changes in breast tissue density, and even the position of the breast tissue can contribute to this phenomenon. Additionally, if you have a history of fibrocystic breast changes, this could also explain the variations in size and tenderness.
The discomfort you mentioned, particularly the pain radiating to your arm, should be monitored. While it is often benign and related to hormonal changes, persistent or severe pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any other underlying conditions. It is important to differentiate between normal cyclical breast pain and pain that may indicate a more serious issue, such as a cyst or other breast pathology.
If you notice that the size discrepancy persists beyond your menstrual cycle or if you develop new symptoms, such as a lump, significant changes in breast shape, or persistent pain, it is advisable to seek a clinical evaluation. A healthcare provider may recommend imaging studies, such as a breast ultrasound or mammogram, to assess the breast tissue and ensure there are no concerning findings.
In summary, the changes you are experiencing in your breast size and tenderness are likely related to the hormonal fluctuations associated with your menstrual cycle. However, it is always prudent to keep track of your symptoms and consult with a healthcare provider if you have any concerns or if your symptoms change. Regular breast self-examinations and awareness of your body can help you identify any unusual changes early on, allowing for timely medical advice and intervention if necessary.
