Red swelling behind the corona?

Hello Doctor, I am a senior high school student.
I have had a habit of masturbation since around sixth grade.
I have never been taught to retract the foreskin to clean the glans, and I was completely unaware that I could do this until recently when I researched related information online and retracted the foreskin to expose the glans myself.
I would like to ask you: 1) Is it normal for the glans and the red skin area to be particularly sensitive? 2) After exposing the glans and taking a shower, I maintained the exposed state while sleeping.
The next morning, I noticed that the red skin area was swollen around the corona, resembling a ring.
Is this normal? (I found that most people reported swelling after undergoing circumcision, but I have not had any surgery and only retracted the foreskin.) 3) I have noticed that my penis has a leftward curve since middle school (both in a normal state and during erection).
What could be the cause of this? Are there any solutions? Thank you, Doctor, for taking the time to answer my questions.

Generally, there shouldn't be any redness; based on your description, it seems like there might be an inflammatory condition.
Increased sensitivity is expected, and it can be quite pronounced.
If the glans is exposed during sleep, it may lead to redness and swelling of the foreskin, which could indicate phimosis, and you should consult a urologist for examination.
It's also common to see a curvature of the penis, but if it doesn't cause any issues during intercourse, it may not be a concern.
However, if you are worried, it's still advisable to see a urologist for evaluation.

More Info

Hello! It's great that you're seeking information about your health, especially regarding such a sensitive topic. Let's address your questions one by one.

1. Sensitivity of the Glans (Gland) and the Red Skin: Yes, it is completely normal for the glans (the head of the penis) and the skin around it to be particularly sensitive. This sensitivity is due to a higher concentration of nerve endings in that area, which is designed to enhance sexual pleasure. However, if you experience discomfort or pain, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional.

2. Swelling After Exposing the Glans: The swelling you described around the coronal sulcus (the groove where the glans meets the shaft) after exposing the glans for the first time could be due to several factors. When you first retract the foreskin, the glans may not be accustomed to being exposed, leading to irritation or mild swelling. This is especially true if the area was previously covered for a long time. However, if the swelling persists, is painful, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as redness, discharge, or a foul odor, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can assess whether there is an underlying issue, such as inflammation or infection.

3. Curvature of the Penis: A slight curvature of the penis, especially when erect, is quite common and usually not a cause for concern. Many men have some degree of curvature, and it can be due to natural anatomical variations. However, if the curvature is significant, causes pain, or interferes with sexual activity, it may be worth discussing with a healthcare professional. Conditions like Peyronie's disease can cause more pronounced curvature and may require treatment.

Additional Information
It's important to maintain good hygiene, especially now that you are aware of the need to clean the glans. When cleaning, gently retract the foreskin (if you have one) and wash the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or chemicals, as they can irritate the sensitive skin.

If you notice any unusual changes, such as persistent swelling, pain, or changes in the appearance of the skin, it’s crucial to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider can offer guidance tailored to your specific situation and ensure that everything is normal.

Lastly, remember that sexual health education is vital, and it's never too late to learn about your body. If you have further questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to a trusted adult or healthcare professional. They can provide you with the support and information you need. Take care!
