Arrhythmia
Hello Doctor: For the past month, I often wake up around 4 to 5 AM feeling dry mouth and a sense of heat in my body, followed by persistent burping.
Then, I experience a sensation of pressure in my throat, accompanied by irregular heartbeats that pause for a moment and then accelerate, causing dizziness that lasts for one to two minutes.
When I stand up, my heart rate briefly returns to normal, but it soon speeds up again, occurring multiple times before returning to normal.
After each episode, I feel physically drained.
These episodes happen in the early morning or late at night.
Could you please advise me on what kind of issue this might be? Which specialty should I consult or what tests should I undergo? I am greatly troubled by these symptoms and would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you very much.

Many factors in daily life can contribute to this condition, such as emotions, stress, irregular sleep patterns, or excessive intake of caffeinated beverages.
It is recommended to adjust your lifestyle and engage in regular exercise.
However, if symptoms persist, it is advisable to visit a hospital for an electrocardiogram (ECG) examination.

More Info
Understanding arrhythmia is crucial, especially when experiencing symptoms like palpitations, dizziness, and a feeling of breathlessness. Based on your description, it seems you are encountering episodes of irregular heartbeats, which can be distressing and may indicate an underlying issue that requires attention.
Symptoms of Arrhythmia
Arrhythmias can manifest in various ways, including:
- Palpitations: A sensation of your heart racing, fluttering, or skipping beats.
- Dizziness or lightheadedness: This can occur due to inadequate blood flow to the brain.
- Shortness of breath: Often experienced during episodes of rapid heart rate.
- Fatigue: Feeling unusually tired after episodes can be a sign of your heart struggling to maintain adequate circulation.
Possible Causes
Several factors can contribute to arrhythmias, including:
- Electrolyte Imbalances: Low levels of potassium, magnesium, or calcium can disrupt the heart's electrical signals.
- Heart Conditions: Structural heart issues, previous heart attacks, or heart valve problems can lead to arrhythmias.
- Stress and Anxiety: Emotional stress can trigger episodes, as can panic attacks, which may mimic symptoms of arrhythmia.
- Stimulants: Caffeine, nicotine, and certain medications can provoke irregular heartbeats.
- Sleep Disorders: Conditions like sleep apnea can lead to nocturnal arrhythmias.
When to Seek Help
Given your symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional, particularly a cardiologist. Here are some steps you might consider:
1. Cardiology Consultation: A cardiologist can evaluate your symptoms in detail and may recommend further testing.
2. Electrocardiogram (ECG): This test records the electrical activity of your heart and can help identify arrhythmias.
3. Holter Monitor: A 24-hour Holter monitor can capture your heart's rhythm over a day, providing insights into any irregularities during your normal activities.
4. Echocardiogram: This ultrasound test can assess the structure and function of your heart, identifying any underlying issues.
5. Blood Tests: Checking electrolyte levels and thyroid function can help rule out metabolic causes of arrhythmia.
Lifestyle Modifications
While awaiting medical evaluation, consider the following lifestyle changes:
- Reduce Stimulants: Limit caffeine and nicotine intake, as they can exacerbate arrhythmias.
- Manage Stress: Engage in relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, or deep-breathing exercises.
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can lead to electrolyte imbalances, so ensure you drink enough fluids.
- Regular Exercise: Moderate physical activity can improve overall cardiovascular health, but consult your doctor before starting any new exercise regimen.
Conclusion
Your symptoms warrant a thorough evaluation to determine the cause of your arrhythmia. It’s essential to address these symptoms promptly, as they can significantly impact your quality of life. By consulting with a cardiologist and undergoing the appropriate tests, you can gain a clearer understanding of your condition and develop a management plan tailored to your needs. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to heart health.
