Side effects of progesterone?
Hello Doctor, I recently visited a doctor due to irregular menstruation.
The doctor prescribed me progesterone to take one pill in the morning and one in the evening for 10 days.
However, after taking it, I have been experiencing a feeling of discomfort and cramping in my lower abdomen similar to menstrual cramps, but I haven't had my period or any bleeding.
Additionally, my gastrointestinal health hasn't been great, and I've been experiencing excessive gas.
Is this a normal reaction? (The doctor also prescribed me medication for my digestive issues, but it doesn't seem to be effective.) Furthermore, I have an appointment on September 25th to receive the BNT vaccine.
Will this have any impact? Thank you.

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, menstruation should normally occur about three days after finishing the medication.
If you are still experiencing bloating, it is advisable to see a gastroenterologist, as it is generally unrelated to vaccination.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
Progesterone, a hormone crucial for regulating various functions in the female reproductive system, is often prescribed to address menstrual irregularities, support pregnancy, or manage symptoms related to hormonal imbalances. While it can be effective in treating these conditions, it is essential to understand the potential side effects and what to expect during treatment.
Common Side Effects of Progesterone
1. Abdominal Discomfort: It is not uncommon for patients to experience abdominal discomfort or a sensation similar to menstrual cramps when taking progesterone. This can be attributed to the hormone's effects on the uterus and surrounding tissues. The discomfort may arise as the body adjusts to the hormonal changes induced by the medication.
2. Gastrointestinal Issues: Many individuals report gastrointestinal disturbances, including bloating, gas, and changes in bowel habits. These symptoms can occur as the body reacts to the introduction of progesterone. If you are experiencing excessive gas and discomfort, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider, especially since you mentioned that the medication prescribed for gastrointestinal relief has not been effective.
3. Mood Changes: Hormonal fluctuations can also impact mood, leading to feelings of irritability or anxiety. Some women may experience mood swings or changes in emotional well-being during treatment.
4. Breast Tenderness: Progesterone can cause breast tenderness or swelling, which is a common side effect due to hormonal changes.
5. Menstrual Changes: While you are currently experiencing irregularities, it is important to note that progesterone can also lead to changes in menstrual flow. Some women may experience lighter or heavier periods, or even missed periods, especially during the initial stages of treatment.
What to Expect
Given that you have been prescribed progesterone for ten days, it is essential to monitor your symptoms. The abdominal discomfort and gastrointestinal issues you are experiencing may be temporary and could subside as your body adjusts to the medication. However, if these symptoms persist or worsen, it is advisable to consult your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Interaction with Vaccines
Regarding your upcoming BNT vaccine appointment, there is currently no evidence to suggest that progesterone will negatively impact the efficacy of the vaccine. However, it is always prudent to inform your healthcare provider about all medications you are taking, including hormonal treatments, before receiving any vaccinations. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current treatment plan.
Conclusion
In summary, while experiencing discomfort and gastrointestinal issues while taking progesterone can be concerning, these symptoms are often part of the adjustment process. It is crucial to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about any side effects you encounter. They can help determine whether your symptoms are typical or if adjustments to your treatment plan are necessary. Additionally, rest assured that taking progesterone should not interfere with your vaccination, but always consult your healthcare provider for tailored advice.
