Do Bright Edges on Rimless Glasses Harm Your Eyes? - Ophthalmology

Eyeglass issues?

I recently got a pair of rimless glasses and noticed that the edges are often very bright.
I asked the online store where I purchased them, and they said that the polishing of the edges causes them to be brighter, and that I would just need to get used to it, as it wouldn't harm my eyes.
My question is whether this "glare" (or reflection?) from the edges of the glasses can harm my eyes? Thank you.

It is recommended to consult other physical eyewear stores or visit an ophthalmology clinic for consultation.
Thank you, and wish you good health.

The bright edges on rimless glasses, often resulting from the polishing process, can indeed raise concerns about potential eye harm. However, the consensus among eye care professionals is that these bright edges, or reflections, are generally not harmful to your eyes. The reflections you notice are primarily due to the way light interacts with the polished surfaces of the lenses.
When light hits the edges of the lenses, it can create glare or reflections that might be distracting, especially in certain lighting conditions. This phenomenon is similar to what one might experience with any highly polished surface, such as glass or metal. While these reflections can be bothersome, they do not inherently cause damage to the eyes.
It is important to note that the human eye is quite adept at adjusting to various light conditions. Over time, many individuals find that they adapt to the bright edges of their glasses. However, if you find that the glare is significantly affecting your vision or causing discomfort, it may be worth considering options to mitigate this issue.
One potential solution is to apply an anti-reflective (AR) coating to your lenses. This coating can help reduce glare and reflections, making your glasses more comfortable to wear, especially in bright environments or when using digital screens. Additionally, if you are frequently exposed to bright lights or screens, you might consider blue light filtering lenses, which can help reduce eye strain associated with prolonged screen time.

If you continue to experience discomfort or visual disturbances, it would be prudent to consult with an eye care professional. They can assess your specific situation and determine if there are any underlying issues that need to be addressed. Furthermore, they can provide personalized recommendations based on your visual needs and lifestyle.

In summary, while the bright edges of rimless glasses are typically not harmful to your eyes, they can be a source of distraction or discomfort for some individuals. If this is the case for you, exploring options like anti-reflective coatings or consulting with an eye care professional may provide relief. Always prioritize your comfort and eye health, and don't hesitate to seek professional advice if you have concerns.
