Stool mixed with white particles?

Hello Doctor, in the past few weeks, my stool color has been normal, without any abnormal colors such as red, black, green, or grayish-white.
However, I sometimes notice a few white particles mixed in, which look somewhat like garlic from the vegetables I had for dinner or like the nuts in chocolate-covered treats, but some appear to resemble rice grains.
I found some information online suggesting that these could be milk crystals, as I do drink fresh milk tea every day.
The information I have found indicates that most white particles do not point to serious diseases, but I am still a bit concerned.
I would like to ask the doctor if there are any serious conditions that could cause this phenomenon?

Mr. Lai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/09/29

Dr. Lin Minghui reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Hello, a 24-year-old male has stool mixed with white particles, which may be undigested food, medication, or fiber.
If concerned, a stool examination can be conducted to check for abnormalities such as parasites or other issues.
Wishing you peace and health! Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to the presence of white specks in stool, it’s understandable to feel concerned, especially when you notice something unusual in your bowel movements. The appearance of white particles can be attributed to several benign causes, but it’s essential to consider various factors to determine if further investigation is necessary.

Firstly, the white specks you describe could be food particles that have not been fully digested. This is particularly common if you consume a diet rich in fibrous vegetables or grains. For instance, if you have been eating foods like garlic, nuts, or certain types of grains, it’s possible that these could appear as white specks in your stool. The digestive system sometimes struggles to break down certain foods completely, leading to their appearance in your stool.

Another potential cause could be the presence of undigested fat, which can sometimes appear as white or pale-colored specks. This condition, known as steatorrhea, occurs when there is an excess of fat in the stool, often due to malabsorption issues. Malabsorption can result from various conditions, including celiac disease, pancreatitis, or issues with the liver or gallbladder. If you notice other symptoms such as weight loss, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation.

You mentioned that you consume fresh milk tea daily. In some cases, dairy products can lead to the formation of small white particles in the stool, particularly if you have a mild intolerance to lactose. If your body struggles to digest lactose, it can lead to gastrointestinal symptoms, including gas, bloating, and changes in stool consistency.

While the presence of white specks in stool is often not indicative of a severe health issue, it’s essential to monitor your overall health and any accompanying symptoms. If the white particles persist, increase in number, or are accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, or unexplained weight loss, it would be wise to seek medical advice. A healthcare provider may recommend stool tests or other diagnostic procedures to rule out any underlying conditions.

In summary, while white specks in stool are often benign and can be attributed to dietary factors or undigested food, it’s crucial to remain vigilant about your health. If you have any concerns or if the situation changes, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and potential testing. Keeping a food diary may also help identify any correlations between your diet and the appearance of these specks, providing valuable information for your healthcare provider.
