If side effects occur after receiving the first dose of the Moderna vaccine, is it necessary to seek medical attention? Can the second dose still be administered?
I am currently 71 years old.
After receiving my first dose of the Moderna vaccine on July 10, I experienced some drowsiness three days later, but no other discomfort.
On July 30, while washing my hair, I suddenly found it difficult to raise both arms, experienced a rapid heartbeat and mild shortness of breath.
My blood pressure was measured at 117/67, but my heart rate was 130, and my oxygen saturation was 98.
After resting for about 20 minutes, I returned to normal, and I was able to raise my arms again.
However, a week later, I experienced palpitations and mild shortness of breath again, and I felt fatigued with slight exertion.
This has occurred several times since then, and the episodes have become more frequent recently.
I would like to ask the doctor: should I seek medical attention? Which specialty should I consult? I have also received a notification to receive my second dose of the Moderna vaccine; is it safe for me to proceed with the vaccination?

Hello Mr.
Jacky, based on the description, the symptoms appeared 21 days after the mRNA vaccination.
According to the guidelines for myocarditis/pericarditis following mRNA vaccination, along with age-related factors, it is highly unlikely that the vaccine is the cause.
It is recommended that you first consult a cardiologist or pulmonologist to evaluate the reasons for your recent symptoms of palpitations and shortness of breath before proceeding with vaccination.
Please refer to the attending physician for detailed information.
Changhua Hospital, Department of Pulmonary Medicine is concerned about you.

More Info
It is important to take any concerning symptoms seriously, especially after receiving a vaccine like Moderna. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced episodes of fatigue, palpitations, and shortness of breath after your first dose of the vaccine. While some side effects are common and typically mild, such as fatigue or soreness at the injection site, the symptoms you are experiencing—particularly the heart palpitations and difficulty lifting your arms—warrant further evaluation.
Given your age and the symptoms you've described, it is advisable to seek medical attention. You should consult with a healthcare professional who can assess your symptoms in detail. A primary care physician would be a good starting point, as they can evaluate your overall health and determine if you need to see a specialist, such as a cardiologist or a pulmonologist, depending on the findings.
In terms of whether you should proceed with the second dose of the Moderna vaccine, this decision should be made in consultation with your healthcare provider. They will consider your medical history, current symptoms, and any potential risks associated with receiving the second dose. It is essential to communicate all your symptoms clearly to your doctor, as they may need to conduct tests, such as an electrocardiogram (ECG) or blood tests, to rule out any underlying conditions that could be contributing to your symptoms.
It is also worth noting that while some individuals may experience side effects from vaccines, serious adverse events are rare. However, your symptoms, particularly if they are persistent or worsening, should not be ignored. The healthcare provider may also review your vaccination history and any other medications you are taking to ensure there are no interactions or contraindications.
In summary, please seek medical attention to discuss your symptoms and determine the best course of action regarding your second dose of the Moderna vaccine. Your health and safety are paramount, and a healthcare professional will be able to provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
