Menstruation starts just before going on a trip!
Hello Doctor, I am taking Diane pills.
The last pill of this month will be on October 30th, and I should expect my period between November 2nd and November 4th.
However, I will be traveling from November 5th to 7th and do not want my period to interfere with my vacation.
Can I start taking the second pack on October 31st and continue until November 5th, so that my period will start right after my trip? Or should I take it until the 7th? Additionally, if I take the second pack to delay my period, do I just wait for my period to come and then resume taking the original 21 pills after seven days? Or can I wait for my period to arrive, stop the medication for a month, and then return to the normal schedule?

The dosage of medications used for delaying menstruation differs slightly from that of contraceptive pills, and their effectiveness cannot be guaranteed when used for delaying menstruation.

To delay your period for travel, it is essential to understand how hormonal contraceptives, like the pill you are currently taking (Diane), work. The primary function of these pills is to regulate your menstrual cycle by providing a steady level of hormones that prevent ovulation and stabilize the uterine lining.
In your case, you are considering starting a second pack of pills immediately after finishing the first pack to delay your period during your travel dates from November 5 to 7. This is a common practice and can be effective. Here’s how you can approach it:
1. Start the Second Pack Early: You can begin taking the second pack of pills on October 31, right after finishing the last pill of your first pack on October 30. By doing this, you will skip the placebo pills (which are typically taken during the last week of the pack) and avoid having your period during your travel.
2. Duration of the Second Pack: You can continue taking the second pack until November 5. After that, you can either stop taking the pills and allow your period to come or continue taking them until November 7, depending on your preference. If you choose to continue until the 7th, be aware that this may lead to a heavier or more prolonged period once you stop.
3. Returning to Your Regular Schedule: After your travel, you can return to your regular pill schedule. If you decide to stop the pills after your trip, you should wait for your period to start before resuming your normal regimen. Typically, you would wait until your next cycle begins (which may take a few days to a week after stopping the pills) before starting a new pack.
4. Consult Your Healthcare Provider: While the above advice is generally applicable, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider before making changes to your medication regimen. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and any potential risks.
5. Considerations: Keep in mind that while delaying your period is generally safe for most women, it can sometimes lead to side effects such as breakthrough bleeding or hormonal imbalances. Additionally, if you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications, it’s crucial to discuss these with your doctor.
In summary, starting your second pack of Diane on October 31 to delay your period for your travel is a viable option. Just ensure you monitor how your body responds and consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice. Enjoy your trip!
