Does the heart cause related diseases?
Hello, doctor.
I have been diagnosed with paroxysmal tachycardia and usually take Inderal to manage it.
Recently, I have been experiencing frequent chest tightness and a heavy feeling in my chest while breathing, but this occurs when my heart rate is normal.
Additionally, I have been feeling fatigued.
A recent chest X-ray showed no significant issues.
Due to my condition, I am hesitant to return to the hospital for further examination.
Based on your experience, can the heart cause feelings of chest tightness or fatigue? Thank you.

Dr. Zhong Yuxun reply Cardiology
Dear Student Huang,
Heart disease can certainly cause chest tightness or fatigue, but chest tightness or fatigue does not necessarily originate from the heart; there may be other causes.
First, it is important to ensure that you are taking Inderal regularly.
Secondly, please return to the hospital as soon as possible to consult your cardiologist.
The pandemic has eased, and major hospitals are now very safe, so there is no need to worry!
Wishing you good health,
Dr.

Yes, heart conditions can indeed cause symptoms such as chest discomfort and fatigue. It is important to understand that while these symptoms can be indicative of heart-related issues, they can also arise from a variety of other medical conditions.
Chest discomfort, often described as chest pain, tightness, or heaviness, can be a sign of several cardiac problems, including angina, myocardial infarction (heart attack), or other forms of heart disease. In your case, you mentioned experiencing paroxysmal tachycardia, which is characterized by episodes of rapid heart rate. This condition can lead to feelings of chest discomfort, especially if the heart is working harder than usual. The sensation of heaviness in the chest during normal breathing may also be linked to anxiety or stress, which can exacerbate the perception of discomfort.
Fatigue is another common symptom associated with heart conditions. When the heart is not functioning optimally, it may not pump blood effectively, leading to decreased oxygen delivery to the body's tissues. This can result in feelings of tiredness or exhaustion, even with minimal exertion. Additionally, if you are experiencing anxiety or stress, this can further contribute to feelings of fatigue, as the body is in a heightened state of alertness, which can be draining over time.
It is also worth noting that other non-cardiac conditions can cause similar symptoms. For instance, gastrointestinal issues such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) can lead to chest discomfort that mimics heart pain. Anxiety and panic disorders can also produce physical symptoms, including chest tightness and fatigue, which can be mistaken for heart problems.
Given your history of paroxysmal tachycardia and the recent onset of chest discomfort and fatigue, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. While your chest X-ray did not show any significant abnormalities, further investigations such as an echocardiogram or stress test may be warranted to assess your heart's function and rule out any underlying issues.
In summary, while heart conditions can certainly cause symptoms like chest discomfort and fatigue, it is essential to consider a comprehensive approach to diagnosis. Factors such as anxiety, stress, and other medical conditions should also be evaluated. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are crucial to monitor your symptoms and adjust your treatment plan as necessary. If you experience worsening symptoms or new symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or severe chest pain, seek immediate medical attention.
