Possible to ingest a fish bone?
Hello doctor, while I was having dinner with cod fish, I might have accidentally swallowed a small fish bone near the fin area.
Later, I induced vomiting and expelled a lot of vegetables and fish, but I still feel a strange sensation in my throat.
Although I don't experience any sharp pain when eating, swallowing, or drinking water, I noticed that when I coughed forcefully, my throat occasionally hurts suddenly.
I'm a bit worried that it might be due to a fish bone getting stuck, but my dad said it's unlikely and that it could be from the repeated vomiting and coughing that caused irritation.
He mentioned that fish bones are usually not fine enough to get lodged without causing significant discomfort.
I plan to visit an ENT clinic tomorrow to get medication for my nasal congestion and allergies, and I will also ask the doctor to check my throat.
However, I'm still concerned about whether I need to go to a larger hospital for an examination.
Is it true that a fish bone lodged in the throat would cause significant discomfort, or am I just overthinking it? Thank you!

Hello, based on your description, it seems that you likely did not swallow a fishbone.
The throat pain may be caused by forceful coughing.
I suggest not to worry too much.
Thank you for your inquiry.

When it comes to concerns about ingesting fish bones, especially small ones, it's important to understand the potential risks and the appropriate steps to take. Based on your description, it seems you may have ingested a small fish bone while eating cod, and you are experiencing some discomfort in your throat.
First, it's essential to recognize that fish bones can sometimes become lodged in the throat or esophagus, leading to discomfort, pain, or difficulty swallowing. However, many people who accidentally swallow small fish bones do not experience any significant issues, as these bones can often pass through the digestive system without causing harm.
In your case, since you mentioned that you experienced a strange sensation in your throat but did not have severe pain or difficulty swallowing, it is possible that you did not ingest a bone or that it has already passed through your system. The discomfort you are feeling could also be related to irritation from the vomiting you induced, which can cause soreness in the throat.
Here are some steps you can take to address your concerns:
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on your symptoms. If the discomfort persists, worsens, or if you experience severe pain, difficulty swallowing, or any signs of infection (such as fever), you should seek medical attention promptly.
2. Hydration and Soft Foods: Drink plenty of fluids and consider consuming soft foods that are easier to swallow. This can help soothe your throat and may assist in dislodging any small particles if they are present.
3. Avoid Inducing Vomiting: Inducing vomiting can cause additional irritation to the throat and may not be necessary. If you feel the need to vomit again, it’s best to consult a healthcare professional first.
4. Consult a Specialist: Since you plan to visit an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, that is a good step. They can perform a thorough examination of your throat and esophagus to check for any foreign bodies or injuries. They may use a laryngoscope or endoscope to visualize the area more clearly.
5. Imaging Studies: If there is a suspicion of a lodged fish bone, the doctor may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays or a CT scan to determine if there is anything present that needs to be addressed.
6. Emergency Care: If you experience severe symptoms such as intense pain, difficulty breathing, or swallowing, you should seek emergency medical care immediately.
In summary, while it is understandable to be concerned about the possibility of having ingested a fish bone, many individuals who experience similar situations do not have significant complications. Your symptoms may be due to irritation rather than a lodged bone. However, consulting with a healthcare professional, especially an ENT specialist, is the best course of action to ensure your safety and peace of mind. They will be able to provide you with a thorough evaluation and appropriate management based on your specific situation.
