My eyes feel strange right after waking up?

Recently, when I wake up in the morning and go to the bathroom, I feel like there is a transparent droplet sliding down from the upper part of my left eye and another droplet sliding up from the lower part of my right eye.
This only happens right after I wake up; at other times, there are no issues at all.
Could this situation be related to floaters or retinal detachment?

Miss Wang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/10/26

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello Ms.
Wang: There are no issues at other times, which may indicate symptoms similar to floaters.
It is possible that objects within the vitreous are moving.
It is advisable to have an examination.

More Info

When you wake up in the morning and experience unusual visual symptoms, such as the sensation of a transparent droplet moving across your eye, it can understandably cause concern. Based on your description, it seems that these symptoms are transient and only occur upon waking, which may suggest a benign cause rather than a serious condition like retinal detachment.

Understanding Your Symptoms
1. Transient Visual Disturbances: The sensation of seeing a "transparent droplet" could be related to several factors. One possibility is that it is a form of visual floaters, which are tiny clumps of gel or cells inside the vitreous (the clear gel that fills the eye). Floaters are common and can appear as spots, threads, or even shapes that drift across your field of vision. They are usually more noticeable in bright light or against a plain background.

2. Positioning and Eye Pressure: Upon waking, your eyes may still be adjusting from the sleep state to full alertness. During sleep, the eyes are closed, and the tear film can become uneven or insufficient. When you first open your eyes, the tear film may not be fully stabilized, leading to temporary visual disturbances. This can also be exacerbated by changes in eye pressure or the position of the head while sleeping.

3. Dryness and Tear Film Instability: If you experience dryness or irritation upon waking, it can lead to a sensation of something moving in your eye. This is often due to the tear film not being adequately replenished during sleep, especially if you sleep in a dry environment or if you suffer from conditions like dry eye syndrome.

When to Seek Medical Attention
While your symptoms may not indicate a serious condition, it is essential to be vigilant. Here are some signs that warrant immediate medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If the sensation continues throughout the day or becomes more frequent, it is advisable to consult an eye care professional.

- Accompanied by Other Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms such as flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, or a shadow or curtain effect in your vision, these could be signs of retinal detachment, which is a medical emergency.

- Changes in Vision: Any sudden changes in your vision, such as blurriness or loss of vision, should prompt an immediate visit to an eye doctor.

Recommendations
1. Eye Examination: It is always a good idea to have regular eye examinations, especially if you notice new symptoms. An eye care professional can perform a thorough examination to rule out any underlying conditions.

2. Maintain Eye Health: Ensure you are practicing good eye hygiene. This includes staying hydrated, using lubricating eye drops if you experience dryness, and ensuring your sleeping environment is conducive to good eye health.

3. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a log of when these symptoms occur and any other associated factors (like sleep quality, environment, etc.). This information can be helpful for your eye care provider.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may not indicate a severe issue like retinal detachment, it is crucial to remain observant and proactive about your eye health. Regular check-ups and being aware of changes in your vision can help ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.

Hello, anxious woman: It is likely not a retinal detachment, but rather a result of vitreous degeneration causing traction on the retina, leading to light sensations. I recommend that you see an ophthalmologist for an examination.
