Palpitations from masturbation?
Hello doctor, today during masturbation, I experienced a heavy and accelerated heartbeat, and the premature contractions became more frequent.
However, during a heart examination six months ago, I had less than 100 premature contractions and only mild mitral valve regurgitation.
Is this normal? Could it be that my anxiety is causing the increased frequency of premature contractions? Additionally, I’m not sure if it’s psychological, but I felt a slight aching sensation in my heart during the process.
I did not experience dizziness, and my breathing is normal.
Thank you for reviewing my concerns.

Hello, it is normal for your heart rate to increase and become more pronounced during masturbation due to excitement.
It is also possible to experience more frequent premature contractions during this time.
However, short-term variations in the frequency of premature contractions do not affect overall heart function.
There's no need to worry.

Heart palpitations during sexual activity, including masturbation, can be a common experience for many individuals. The sensations of a racing heart, increased awareness of heartbeats, or even discomfort in the chest can be attributed to several factors, both physiological and psychological.
Firstly, during sexual arousal and orgasm, the body undergoes a series of physiological changes. The heart rate naturally increases due to heightened sympathetic nervous system activity, which is responsible for the "fight or flight" response. This increase in heart rate can lead to sensations of palpitations or an awareness of the heartbeat, especially if you are already predisposed to anxiety or have a history of heart-related concerns.
In your case, you mentioned experiencing frequent premature contractions (premature ventricular contractions or PVCs) and a mild mitral valve regurgitation. While PVCs can be concerning, they are often benign, especially in individuals without significant underlying heart disease. The fact that your previous cardiac evaluations showed only mild issues and no significant abnormalities is reassuring. However, the increase in the frequency of these contractions during masturbation could indeed be linked to anxiety or stress. Anxiety can exacerbate the perception of heart palpitations and can lead to a cycle where the awareness of palpitations increases anxiety, which in turn can lead to more palpitations.
The sensation of your heart feeling "sore" or "painful" during these moments could also be a result of muscle tension or anxiety rather than a direct cardiac issue. Stress and anxiety can lead to muscle tightness in the chest area, which can mimic or exacerbate feelings of discomfort. It’s important to note that while anxiety can cause these sensations, any persistent or severe chest pain should be evaluated by a healthcare professional to rule out any serious conditions.
If you find that these symptoms are recurrent or causing you significant distress, it may be beneficial to consult with a cardiologist to discuss your concerns further. They may recommend additional tests or monitoring to ensure that your heart is functioning well. Additionally, working with a mental health professional to address anxiety could also be beneficial. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and relaxation techniques can help manage anxiety and reduce the physical symptoms associated with it.
In summary, while experiencing heart palpitations during masturbation can be concerning, it is often a benign response related to physiological changes and anxiety. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step to ensure your heart health and overall well-being.
