Medication issues after vaccination?

Hello, doctor.
I just received the BNT vaccine.
Can I apply eczema steroids (Betamethasone) and mouth ulcer medication (Mondesil) that contains alcohol after getting the BNT vaccine? Thank you.
Also, if I experience severe mouth ulcers after the vaccination, does that indicate a potential issue with my immune system? Thank you.

Mr. Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/11/01

Dr. Lin Wufu reply Internal Medicine

Hello: Generally, topical medications are not significantly absorbed by the body, so their effect on the vaccine's efficacy is minimal (however, oral steroids may weaken the vaccine's effectiveness).
Many people experience various side effects after vaccination, and mouth sores are not uncommon.
If they completely improve within one to two weeks, there is no need for excessive concern.

More Info

After receiving the BNT vaccine, it is generally safe to use topical steroids for eczema, such as Betamethasone (倍達舒), and oral medications for mouth sores, such as Mondesah (蒙德莎), which contains alcohol. The use of these medications does not interfere with the vaccine's efficacy or safety. Topical steroids are often prescribed to manage inflammation and itching associated with skin conditions like eczema, while medications for mouth sores can help alleviate pain and promote healing.

It is important to note that while using these medications post-vaccination is permissible, individuals should always consult with their healthcare provider if they have concerns about specific medications or their interactions with vaccines. The immune response to vaccines can vary from person to person, and some individuals may experience side effects such as mouth sores or other symptoms. This does not necessarily indicate a problem with their immune system; rather, it may be a normal reaction as the body adjusts to the vaccine.

Regarding the occurrence of severe mouth sores after vaccination, it is essential to consider that vaccines can sometimes trigger immune responses that may exacerbate pre-existing conditions or lead to new symptoms. However, this does not imply that there is a deficiency in immune function. The immune system is complex and can react in various ways to vaccinations, including the development of localized inflammation or irritation in sensitive areas like the mouth.

If you are experiencing significant discomfort from mouth sores or if they persist, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can provide appropriate treatment options and assess whether any underlying conditions may be contributing to the severity of your symptoms. Additionally, they can offer guidance on managing any side effects from the vaccine and ensure that your recovery is on track.

In summary, using topical steroids and alcohol-containing medications after receiving the BNT vaccine is generally safe. However, if you have concerns about your immune response or the severity of your symptoms, consulting with a healthcare provider is the best course of action. They can provide personalized advice and treatment options based on your specific situation.
