Chest issues
Hello doctor, for the past few days, I have been experiencing pain in a small area on the lower right side of my left chest.
Sometimes it lasts for a few minutes, other times just a few seconds, and it occurs repeatedly.
The pain worsens when I exhale, but there is no pain when I apply pressure.
I have previously experienced various discomforts due to anxiety, and this type of pain occurred for a few days back then.
Recently, I have been feeling a bit anxious again, and the pain has started again.
I would like to know if this is a heart issue or an anxiety-related problem.
Should I seek medical attention or just observe it?

Hello, your age is right in the growth period.
Occasional chest pain during puberty is quite common, especially when anxiety leads to autonomic nervous system dysregulation, which can cause various discomforts.
Most of the time, it is not related to heart problems unless there is a congenital heart disease.
Therefore, the likelihood of heart issues at this age is low; anxiety is more likely the cause.
It would be advisable to monitor the situation.

Chest pain can be a concerning symptom, and understanding its underlying causes is crucial for appropriate management. Based on your description of experiencing pain in the lower left area of your chest that worsens with exhalation but does not hurt when pressed, it is essential to consider both cardiac and non-cardiac origins for your symptoms.
Firstly, it is important to note that anxiety can manifest physically in various ways, including chest pain. This is often due to the body's stress response, which can lead to muscle tension, hyperventilation, and increased sensitivity to pain. When you experience anxiety, your body may react by tightening the muscles in your chest and surrounding areas, which can lead to discomfort or pain. This phenomenon is sometimes referred to as "musculoskeletal pain" or "costochondritis," where the muscles and cartilage in the chest wall become inflamed or strained.
On the other hand, while anxiety-related chest pain is common, it is crucial to rule out any potential cardiac issues, especially if the pain is new, persistent, or associated with other symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or radiating pain to the arm or jaw. Given your history of anxiety and the recent increase in stress, it is plausible that your symptoms could be related to anxiety. However, it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to chest pain.
If you have not already done so, I recommend scheduling an appointment with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may perform a physical examination and consider additional tests such as an electrocardiogram (EKG), chest X-ray, or blood tests to assess your heart's health. These evaluations can help determine whether your symptoms are indeed related to anxiety or if there is an underlying cardiac issue that needs to be addressed.
In the meantime, managing your anxiety may help alleviate your symptoms. Techniques such as deep breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, and regular physical activity can be beneficial. Engaging in activities that you enjoy and finding ways to relax can also help reduce anxiety levels. If you find that your anxiety is significantly impacting your daily life, consider speaking with a mental health professional who can provide support and coping strategies.
In summary, while your symptoms may be related to anxiety, it is essential to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any serious heart conditions. Taking proactive steps to manage your anxiety and seeking medical advice will help ensure your well-being and peace of mind. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing any concerns with a professional is always the best course of action.
