Pain and numbness on the right side of the body?
Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing these symptoms for over a year.
The main issues are soreness and tightness in the right side of my neck and shoulder, along with numbness and tingling that radiates from my right arm to my fingers.
I often find myself shrugging my right shoulder unconsciously.
When I turn my head to the left, I feel a tight pulling sensation in the neck muscles, and I wake up with soreness in the right side of my neck and shoulder.
I frequently use a computer and smartphone at work, and I go to the gym after work, but I don't lift heavy weights.
During training or while focusing on work, I don't feel any soreness.
I'm wondering if there are any exercises or postural adjustments that could help improve my condition.

Dear Mr.
Tsao,
You mentioned that "the soreness and tightness in the right shoulder and neck, along with numbness and tingling extending from the right arm to the fingers," may indicate a potential issue with cervical nerve root compression.
It is important to consider cervical nerve root compression, which is often associated with tightness in the cervical muscles and degeneration of the cervical spine.
Symptoms typically include pain at the affected site, discomfort, muscle stiffness, and neurological sensations.
Symptoms may worsen upon waking or with changes in weather, but can be alleviated with stretching activities, and often recur.
During acute episodes, there may be localized muscle tension and spasms, leading to restricted movement.
When the intervertebral disc compresses the nerves between the fourth and fifth cervical vertebrae, it can cause shoulder and neck pain, while compression between the sixth and seventh cervical vertebrae may lead to symptoms of numbness, tingling, and weakness in the fingertips.
I recommend that you consult with a neurologist or a rehabilitation specialist to discuss examination and treatment options.
Thank you for your inquiry, and feel free to reach out for further discussions on related issues!
Wishing you good health and peace,
Dr.

More Info
Understanding right-side pain and numbness, particularly in the shoulder, neck, and arm, can be complex and multifaceted. Your symptoms of persistent discomfort, muscle tightness, and numbness extending from your shoulder down to your fingers suggest a possible issue with nerve compression or muscle strain, often exacerbated by poor posture or repetitive strain injuries.
Possible Causes
1. Cervical Radiculopathy: This condition occurs when a nerve in the neck is compressed or irritated, often due to herniated discs or bone spurs. Symptoms can include pain, numbness, or weakness radiating down the arm. The tightness you feel when turning your head could indicate nerve involvement.
2. Muscle Strain: Overuse or poor posture, especially while working at a computer or using a smartphone, can lead to muscle strain in the neck and shoulder area. This is often referred to as "tech neck," where the head is held forward, putting strain on the cervical spine and surrounding muscles.
3. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: This condition occurs when blood vessels or nerves in the space between your collarbone and your first rib become compressed. Symptoms can include pain in the shoulders and neck, numbness in the fingers, and weakness in the hand.
4. Poor Ergonomics: Spending long hours in front of a computer without proper ergonomic support can lead to muscle imbalances and strain. This includes improper chair height, monitor placement, and keyboard positioning.
Solutions and Recommendations
1. Posture Correction: Ensure that your workstation is ergonomically set up. Your monitor should be at eye level, and your chair should support your lower back. Keep your feet flat on the ground and your arms at a 90-degree angle when typing.
2. Regular Breaks: Implement the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away. This helps reduce eye strain and encourages you to change your posture.
3. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Incorporate neck and shoulder stretches into your daily routine. Simple exercises like shoulder rolls, neck tilts, and chest openers can alleviate tightness. Strengthening exercises for the upper back and shoulders can also help improve posture and reduce strain.
4. Physical Therapy: If your symptoms persist, consider consulting a physical therapist. They can provide tailored exercises and treatments, such as manual therapy, to relieve pain and improve function.
5. Heat and Cold Therapy: Applying heat can help relax tight muscles, while cold therapy can reduce inflammation. Alternate between the two as needed.
6. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Stress can contribute to muscle tension. Practices such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises can help manage stress and promote relaxation.
7. Consult a Specialist: If your symptoms do not improve with these measures, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare professional, such as a neurologist or orthopedic specialist, to rule out any underlying conditions.
Conclusion
Your symptoms of right-side shoulder and neck pain, along with numbness in the arm, are likely related to a combination of muscle strain and potential nerve involvement. By addressing posture, incorporating regular breaks, and engaging in targeted exercises, you can significantly improve your condition. However, if symptoms persist or worsen, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to ensure a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
