Nasal congestion and pain issues?
Hello Doctor, I have recently been feeling a sense of congestion and some soreness in the left side of my nose, but I can't pinpoint the exact location.
I haven't experienced any nasal trauma recently.
I would like to ask you: 1) Given the limited information, what could be the possible causes (I have a history of allergic rhinitis)? 2) When I try to find the pain point, I notice that there seems to be a movable and compressible cartilage in the left nasal tip, but I can't feel anything similar on the right side.
Is this normal? 3) Which specialty should I consult for this issue? Thank you for your clarification, Doctor.

More Info
Nasal congestion and pain can be quite uncomfortable and may stem from various underlying causes. Given your symptoms of left-sided nasal congestion and soreness, along with your history of allergic rhinitis, there are several potential explanations and solutions to consider.
1. Possible Causes:
- Allergic Rhinitis: Since you have a history of allergic rhinitis, it is possible that your symptoms are exacerbated by allergens in your environment. Allergic reactions can lead to inflammation in the nasal passages, causing congestion and discomfort.
- Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses, known as sinusitis, can occur due to allergies or infections. This condition can lead to pressure and pain in the nasal area, particularly if one side is more affected than the other.
- Nasal Polyps: These are non-cancerous growths in the nasal passages that can develop due to chronic inflammation. They can cause blockage and discomfort, particularly if they are located on one side.
- Structural Issues: Deviated septum or other anatomical variations can lead to uneven airflow and pressure in the nasal passages, resulting in congestion and pain.
- Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can also lead to localized pain and congestion, especially if there is accompanying inflammation.
2. Soft Cartilage in the Nose:
- The soft structure you feel on the left side of your nose is likely the nasal cartilage, which is normal. The asymmetry you notice between the left and right sides can be due to natural anatomical variations. However, if you notice significant swelling, tenderness, or changes in the shape of your nose, it may warrant further investigation.
3. Recommended Specialist:
- Given your symptoms and history, it would be advisable to consult an Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, which may include nasal endoscopy or imaging studies like a CT scan to assess for sinus issues, polyps, or other structural abnormalities.
Additional Recommendations:
- Nasal Irrigation: Using saline nasal sprays or performing nasal irrigation can help clear out allergens and mucus, providing relief from congestion.
- Antihistamines: If your symptoms are related to allergies, over-the-counter antihistamines may help reduce inflammation and relieve congestion.
- Steam Inhalation: Inhaling steam can help soothe irritated nasal passages and promote drainage.
- Avoiding Triggers: Identifying and avoiding allergens or irritants that trigger your symptoms can be beneficial. This may include dust, pollen, pet dander, or strong odors.
In summary, your left-sided nasal congestion and pain could be attributed to allergic rhinitis, sinusitis, or other structural issues. Consulting with an ENT specialist will provide you with a clearer diagnosis and tailored treatment options. Remember, early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
