Miscarriage bleeding conditions
Hello Doctor: I am 6 weeks pregnant.
On October 26, the doctor informed me that the gestational sac had shrunk, and the next day, October 27, I naturally miscarried and expelled tissue (without taking any medication).
I continued to experience bleeding, and during a follow-up ultrasound on November 1, the doctor indicated that there was still about a 2 cm blood clot remaining.
I was prescribed uterotonics to help with uterine contractions.
As of November 9, I am still bleeding.
I would like to inquire whether the bleeding after a natural miscarriage is normal and how long it might last.
Additionally, can I receive the BNT vaccine during the bleeding period? Thank you.

Dr. Zhang Kunmin reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Hello, the patient must return for a follow-up appointment one to two weeks after taking the abortion medication.
Clinical examination, ultrasound, and β-HCG measurement should be conducted to confirm whether the embryo has been completely expelled.
It is also recommended to receive vaccinations once the condition is stable.
Thank you! Wishing you safety and health.

I'm sorry to hear about your recent experience with a miscarriage. It's a challenging time, both physically and emotionally. Let's address your concerns regarding post-miscarriage bleeding and vaccination.
Firstly, it's important to understand that after a miscarriage, it is common to experience bleeding as your body expels the pregnancy tissue. The duration and amount of bleeding can vary significantly from person to person. Generally, bleeding can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. In your case, since you mentioned that you had a natural miscarriage and are still experiencing bleeding, it is not unusual, especially if there are still remnants of tissue in the uterus, as indicated by the ultrasound findings of a 2 cm blood clot. The medication prescribed to help your uterus contract should assist in expelling any remaining tissue, which may help reduce the bleeding over time.
Regarding the duration of bleeding, it can be influenced by several factors, including how far along you were in your pregnancy, your overall health, and whether there are any complications. It’s crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider if the bleeding is heavy, if you experience severe pain, or if you have any concerns about your recovery.
Now, concerning your question about receiving the BNT vaccine while experiencing bleeding post-miscarriage, it is generally considered safe to receive vaccinations during this time. The primary concern with vaccinations is ensuring that your body is in a stable condition to mount an immune response effectively. Since the bleeding itself is a result of the miscarriage and not an active infection or other contraindication, it should not prevent you from getting vaccinated.
However, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider before proceeding with any vaccinations, especially after a recent miscarriage. They can assess your specific situation, including your overall health, the amount of bleeding, and any other symptoms you may be experiencing. They can provide personalized advice on whether it is appropriate for you to receive the vaccine at this time.
In summary, post-miscarriage bleeding can vary in duration and intensity, and it is essential to monitor your symptoms and follow up with your healthcare provider. As for vaccination, it is typically safe during this period, but always seek guidance from your doctor to ensure it aligns with your health status. Take care of yourself during this time, and don't hesitate to reach out for support, both medically and emotionally.
