Will Fibroid Surgery Affect Breast Size? What to Expect Post-Operation - Surgery

Fibroid surgery

After undergoing fibroid surgery, will my breasts become smaller? I plan to have the surgery next month, and I am currently in Australia.
The procedure is scheduled to remove one fibroid on the left breast at the 7 o'clock position, approximately 2.6 cm in size, and on the right breast, one fibroid at the 10 o'clock position measuring 2.7 cm, as well as another at the 12 o'clock position measuring about 1.8 to 2 cm (since these two are very close together).
The doctor mentioned that both sides will be operated on at the areola, and the postoperative scars will be minimal.
The right side can be done through the same incision.
However, I am not very full-breasted, currently a size 32D, and I am worried that my breasts will appear smaller after the surgery.
Being only 24 years old, I am particularly concerned about my appearance and feel quite anxious.
Thank you, doctor.

Hello, fibromas are classified as benign tumors, and the excision does not need to be extensive; however, it may still result in localized breast indentation after removal.
This issue can be addressed during surgery by bringing the surrounding breast tissue closer together to minimize the cavity left after fibroma excision.
It is advisable for you to discuss your concerns with the surgeon to better understand the extent of the potential impact.

Undergoing fibroid surgery, particularly in the breast, can understandably raise concerns about changes in breast size and overall appearance. Fibroadenomas, which are benign tumors of the breast, are typically removed through surgical procedures that can vary in technique and extent. In your case, you are scheduled to have multiple fibroadenomas removed from both breasts, which naturally leads to questions about how this might affect your breast size.

Firstly, it is important to understand that the removal of fibroadenomas does involve the excision of some breast tissue. However, the impact on breast size can vary significantly based on several factors, including the size of the tumors, the amount of surrounding tissue removed, and individual anatomical differences. In your situation, you mentioned that the tumors are approximately 2.6 cm, 2.7 cm, and 1.8 to 2 cm in size. While the removal of these tumors will result in some loss of breast tissue, the overall effect on breast size may not be as drastic as one might fear, especially if the surgeon employs techniques to minimize the impact on the surrounding tissue.

Surgeons often aim to preserve as much healthy breast tissue as possible during the procedure. In your case, since the incisions will be made around the areola, this approach can help in reducing visible scarring and may also allow for better cosmetic outcomes. Additionally, your surgeon may use techniques to reposition the surrounding breast tissue to fill in any void left by the excised fibroadenomas, which can help maintain the overall shape and fullness of the breast.

It is also worth noting that individual healing processes can vary. Some patients may experience temporary swelling or changes in breast shape as they recover from surgery. This is a normal part of the healing process, and as the tissues settle and heal, the breasts may return to a more natural appearance. It is advisable to have a candid discussion with your surgeon about your concerns regarding breast size and aesthetics. They can provide you with a more personalized assessment based on your specific situation and surgical plan.

In terms of your concerns about being 24 years old and the potential impact on your appearance, it is completely understandable to feel anxious about these changes. Many young women share similar concerns when facing breast surgery. It may be helpful to consider that the removal of fibroadenomas is often a necessary step for both physical health and peace of mind, especially if there are concerns about the nature of the tumors.

Lastly, post-operative care is crucial for optimal recovery. Following your surgeon's instructions regarding activity restrictions, wound care, and follow-up appointments will be essential in ensuring a smooth healing process. If you have any specific worries about the surgery or recovery, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for guidance and reassurance.

In summary, while there may be some changes in breast size following the removal of fibroadenomas, the extent of these changes can vary. Open communication with your surgeon and a thorough understanding of the surgical process can help alleviate some of your concerns. Remember that your health and well-being are the top priorities, and addressing any issues with your breast health is a positive step forward.
