Thyroid follicular tracking issues?
Hello, doctor: About a year ago, during a health check-up, an ultrasound examination revealed a follicular issue near the thyroid that requires regular monitoring.
I would like to inquire about the follow-up process.
Should I directly schedule an appointment with an otolaryngologist (ENT) for the ultrasound, or is there a more appropriate specialty I should consult? Thank you!

Hello, if there are follicular issues near the thyroid gland, regular monitoring is necessary.
Most hospitals allow you to have examinations in the ENT (Ear, Nose, and Throat) department or the Metabolism department.
Some hospitals also have general surgery and imaging departments that perform thyroid ultrasounds, but this is not common practice.
Please take this into consideration.

When it comes to monitoring thyroid nodules, it is essential to consult the right specialist to ensure proper evaluation and management. In your case, since you have already undergone an ultrasound examination that revealed a follicular issue in the thyroid, it is advisable to follow up with an endocrinologist rather than an otolaryngologist (ENT specialist).
Endocrinologists specialize in hormonal disorders and are well-versed in managing conditions related to the thyroid gland. They can provide a comprehensive assessment of your thyroid nodules, including determining the need for further imaging, blood tests (such as thyroid function tests), and possibly a fine-needle aspiration biopsy if there is a concern about malignancy.
The American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines recommend that thyroid nodules be monitored based on their size, characteristics, and the patient's risk factors. For instance, nodules that are larger than 1 cm, especially if they have suspicious features on ultrasound, may require more frequent follow-up and possibly intervention. Regular monitoring typically involves ultrasound examinations every 6 to 12 months, depending on the initial findings.
If you choose to see an ENT specialist, they may also be able to perform ultrasound examinations and evaluate the nodules. However, they may not have the same level of expertise in managing thyroid disorders as an endocrinologist. Therefore, while an ENT can provide care, an endocrinologist is generally the preferred specialist for ongoing monitoring and management of thyroid nodules.
In summary, for the follow-up of your thyroid nodule, it is best to schedule an appointment with an endocrinologist. They will be able to guide you through the necessary steps for monitoring and managing your condition effectively. If you have any concerns or symptoms, such as changes in voice, difficulty swallowing, or any signs of hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, make sure to communicate these during your visit.
In addition to specialist consultations, it is also important to maintain a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, which can support overall thyroid health. If you have any further questions or need assistance in finding a specialist, feel free to ask.
