Irregular menstrual cycle?

Due to adenomyosis, I stopped taking medication (You Ru) at the end of April, and my menstrual cycle resumed in June, which has been relatively regular.
However, starting last month, my periods have become irregular, with bleeding occurring approximately every week.

1.
I would like to ask if this could be related to the vaccine? (After the first dose, I experienced menstrual-like cramps, and after the second dose, I had sudden bleeding the next day.)
2.
Last week, I returned to the clinic due to menstrual pain (my period had just ended), and I forgot to mention the irregular bleeding to my doctor.
The doctor continued to prescribe You Ru, instructing me to take it on the first day of my period.
However, I started bleeding again today...
Now I'm unsure whether I should take it.
Thank you for your response.

Jing, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2021/11/22

Regarding your concerns, here is a summary of the response: It has been reported in clinical cases that irregular menstruation can occur after vaccination.
However, for individuals with existing uterine conditions, any bleeding outside of the menstrual period should be taken seriously.
It is recommended that you return to the original medical institution for a detailed description of your situation, which will allow for a comprehensive diagnosis and help avoid potential delays in addressing any medical issues.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you health and happiness.

Irregular menstrual cycles can be a source of concern for many women, and understanding the potential causes is crucial for managing your health effectively. Based on your description, it seems you have experienced changes in your menstrual cycle following the use of medication for adenomyosis and possibly in relation to recent vaccinations. Let's explore the potential causes and considerations regarding your situation.

1. Impact of Medications: Adenomyosis can lead to heavy and painful periods, and medications like hormonal contraceptives (such as the one you mentioned, "佑汝") are often prescribed to help manage symptoms. These medications work by regulating hormonal levels, which can stabilize your menstrual cycle. However, when you stop taking them, your body may take some time to readjust, leading to irregularities. It is not uncommon for women to experience fluctuations in their menstrual cycles after discontinuing hormonal treatments.

2. Vaccination Effects: There is emerging evidence suggesting that vaccinations, particularly those related to COVID-19, can temporarily affect menstrual cycles. Some women have reported changes such as heavier bleeding or irregular cycles following vaccination. The exact mechanism is still being studied, but it is believed that the immune response triggered by the vaccine may influence hormonal regulation. If you noticed a correlation between your vaccination and changes in your menstrual cycle, it is worth discussing with your healthcare provider.

3. Understanding Breakthrough Bleeding: The unexpected bleeding you are experiencing could be classified as breakthrough bleeding, which is common when starting or adjusting hormonal contraceptives. It can also occur if the body is not adequately adjusted to the hormonal levels. If you have recently resumed taking your medication, it may take a few cycles for your body to stabilize.

4. Consulting Your Healthcare Provider: Since you mentioned that you forgot to discuss your irregular bleeding with your doctor during your last visit, it is essential to bring this up at your next appointment. Your healthcare provider can assess whether the irregular bleeding is a side effect of the medication or if there are other underlying issues that need to be addressed. They may suggest monitoring your cycle for a few months or adjusting your medication if necessary.

5. When to Seek Immediate Care: If you experience severe pain, heavy bleeding (soaking through a pad or tampon every hour for several hours), or any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of complications that require immediate evaluation.

6. Lifestyle and Stress Factors: It's also important to consider lifestyle factors that can affect menstrual cycles, such as stress, diet, exercise, and sleep patterns. High levels of stress or significant changes in weight can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to irregular cycles.

In conclusion, while it is possible that both the medication and the vaccine could contribute to your irregular menstrual cycles, it is essential to have a comprehensive discussion with your healthcare provider. They can help you determine the best course of action, whether that involves continuing your current medication, adjusting dosages, or exploring other treatment options. Keeping a detailed record of your menstrual cycle, including any symptoms, can also be beneficial for your healthcare provider in diagnosing and managing your condition effectively.
